One of the schools I really want to go to is out of state and I am scared to death about the transition from the Midwest to the South if I get in...have any of you dealing this same problem? And if so how are you going to deal with being away?

Also, I am concerned about the amount of debt I would acquire and was wondering how those of you who are going out of state plan on financing your education. I have filed the FAFSA, but I know that I wouldn't get enough money to cover the whole cost....what are private loans and how to you go about getting those??

You really should be able to get enough federal loans to cover tuition and most or all living expenses. Everyone qualifies for $38,500 of Stafford loans (whether a portion of that is subsidized or not depends upon financial need). Then there are GradPLUS loans and maybe a few others that are also unsubsidized and thus not based on financial need, either. At the schools I've been to that have had financial aid talks, they've said many times that there is no problem with students getting $40-$45K in government loans. It could even be higher than that...I don't have the info in front of me. I'd call up a financial aid office and ask them to run through the max amounts of the different loans with you (unsub especially since you're worried about qualifying and those everyone qualified for).

I left the Midwest to come down South for undergrad and I absolutely love it! The weather is a definite plus and people are really nice. There are definitely some differences, but I don't think it is as drastic as you would think. I applied to vet schools back in the midwest, so I'll be sad to leave the South, but I definitely want to return here one day a possibly reside here long term.

What school are you looking to go to?

One of the schools I might end up going to is in another country. There will be cultural differences whenever you leave your own region, but if you like the school, you shouldn't let that stop you. Plus, like someone else said, at least it will be warmer!!

Am I missing something? Did Stafford loan amounts go up? The maximum I was able to get this year was 30,500 including the $10,000 health professional loan.

Your 10000 HPL loan reduces your eligibility for stafford (supposed to be a better loan???)

If you went to a school that did not have HPL you would easily get closer to 40K per year stafford (32k unsub, 8.5k sub) as I did all four years at Western (although I probably paid higher tuition/cost of living expenses in SoCAL.)

Still a little bit confused since everywhere I looked it says max Stafford of 20,500. Is there a website about this somewhere? Just for my own curiosity. Thanks for your help.

I know it seems like it would be nice to live somewhere else other than where you've been all your life or whatnot, but is it really worth going into that much debt? I mean, if you don't get into your state school then I see the benefit, but not if you get tuition at nearly a third of the price. I beleive that you will get out what you put into any vet school.

the 20,500 is for a "graduate student" medical students (including veterinary) have higher caps:

http://www.finaid.org/loans/studentloan.phtml

here is two sites. I do not really have time to hunt down a bunch for you but hopefully this will help.

Well when CA is you home state, there is not much difference between Davis IS and OOS elsewhere. Of course you could move away for a year before applying and hope that your new state will consider you a resident...

How is that true? For Davis vs. Wisconsin, sure, in state CA ~= out of state WI. But for Davis vs. Kansas for example, the difference is like $13K. Sure, cost of living is going to vary. But not that much.

hmmm I was going to rent a one bedroom house in manhattan for $450 when I started (before I decided to go to Western). In NoCAL that same house easily would be $1000 so I would say that yes cost of living is that much different (I am sure you will see that if you choose between Davis and Kansas).

I don't know.... I'm a CA resident and I'd much rather pay reasonable IS tuition and a higher rent than pay insanely high OOS tuition. When you go OOS you also have to factor in travel expenses, $$$ to buy new furniture, and all of the other little things people forget about. I'm out of state for UG and you'd be amazed how fast all of the elements add up! Yikes!
