I'll be heading to Fort Sam Houston for OBC this summer (USUHS) and was wondering if their was time during the 6 weeks to play some golf. I noticed there were golf courses nearby... Is it doable?

Just for reference, the chipping green is LITERALLY 50 ft from the BOQ you'll be staying in. I have no idea how many rounds I played...a lot. Some days we squeezed in 9 after class dring the week, weekends were no holds barred.

Thanks. That is good news. I was hoping to get in some rounds. It appears that our lodging somewhat resembles a hotel so I imagine that I can safely store my clubs in my room. Also, is the military rate for green fees pretty nice?

I will be playing with everyone any chance I get. Fisher, how are you getting your clubs down to OBC with you? I will bring mine as well if possible (Nike Slingshot OSS, SQ 460cc driver and mizuno black ox wedges).

I imagine that I will be flying down there so hopefully I can just add them as luggage. I am a civilian so I haven't been versed in the military stuff but I am learning about it.

I noticed you are from Washington. I'm in the puget sound area.

where in the puget sound? I'm from Olympia but live in Ellensburg right now.

I went to OBC four years ago and bought an unlimited month pass at the golf course for $55. You can walk to the course from the barraks we stayed at. I golfed at least a couple of holes every night. Well worth it. Bring your clubs but if possible drive your car.

Man you Army and Air Force guys have it rough 🙄 . At Navy OIS, I didn't eat with a knife and fork until the second week, didn't get coffee until the last week, didn't get O-club privileges until the third weekend, and didn't get off base until our last weekend (and even that was in WHITES 😱 ) Civilian clothes...? Got to wear them on the flight to Newport and the flight home. Oh, did I mention "murder death kills" by Marine DIs? And, BTW, that is still a LOT more cush than what your average soldier, sailor, marine, airman goes through at boot camp. So this is for everyone looking to play golf during OBC/OIT/summer camp/whatever: +pity+

Thanks for the info. I hope the pass is still available this summer.

Alot of people have recommended bringing a car. Is the car mainly for getting off base during the weekends? I am coming from the Northwest so driving would be a long road trip I would like to avoid. Are there other advantages besides motoring to town on the weekends?

I was wondering the same thing about driving...I'd be coming all the way from upstate NY and I would love to have my car there but I thought I read somewhere they would only reimburse one day of travel. Anyone have any info? Also, I know OBC is changing this year and was just wondering what everyone has heard about the new program. Thanks for the help 🙂

If I were you I would check on the reimbursement for travel. I know with the Navy they will only reimburse if your drive is either no more than 4 hours away or 400 miles. I can not remember which one.

I'm will be coming from the Northeast also (NJ) .... I'm not 100% that
I will be attending USUHS but I think its good to plan.

So anybody coming from the NY/NJ/CT/PA area why don't we
plan the trip together, at least tentatively..
We could rent a van or something, and save some bucks, that
we could otherwise spend on other things.. like beer 🙂

So if anyone is interested in this just post here, we can
later discuss on PMs.

While you are living in the barracks you need a car to get around the base. such as getting to class, formation, lunch, ect; not to mention the weekends. If you have one car per group of friends (three or four) it's ok, but it's sooo much easier if you have your car there. I agree that the drive sucks, but if I had to do it again I'd drive down there and take a road trip.

even 50 ft might be overestimating it. i brought my clubs as well and was very happy i did 🙂

the course isn't amazing, but golf is golf. it's as hard for me on crappy courses as it is the hard ones, lol.

You will be right behind the 10th hole at the Ft Sam Houston course, and the chipping green is literally right behind the BOQ.

Ft Sam's course is horrible.

That said, there are several courses in San Antonio that are really, really good courses and most, if not all offer a great military rate. If at all possible bring your POV and you will be able to shave several strokes off your handicap and play some really good courses.

Here is a list:
The Quarry
The Republic
Hyatt Hill Country (50$ flat rate even on weekends for military, normally about 100$, best course for the money)
La Cantera (you should be able to find a 2 for 1 coupon floating around)
Canyon Springs
The Bandit

Have fun!
