Wats up people? I've had a couple of interview invites from programs I dont think I would've gotten interviews from if it weren't for the fact that I had rotated there or knew someone in the dept. My question to all of you is that, are these people that may have not chosen me for an interview based soley on my application, going to even rank me. Is it even worth me going to an interview if I only received it b/c of someone i knew at the program? Also, it seems to me everyones interviews go pretty smoothly, how do get a feeling of where certain programs are goign to rank you on their list...any method to the madness? thnx for your help

peace

i'm having the same dilemma. i'm not anticipating getting ranked at one of my courtesy interviews. in fact, right now, i wish they had not granted me an interview if it were only out of courtesy. it seems a waste of stress, money, and travel to go through all that only to not get ranked.

If a program knows you through your having rotated there or through some other connection, and they feel that you are someone they can work with, that is a big plus that a lot of standard, "non-courtesy" interviewees do not have. So get over your insecurities, continue to keep in contact with your favorite programs, and just rank the programs in the order of your interest.

How do you recommend keeping in contact with your favorite programs. Emails to the PD, residency coordinator? Letters/Cards to the PD? Phone calls to the PD/Chairman? What do you think is the best way?

Thanks

I'm still in the process, but my feeling is go with the medium that you are most comfortable with. For me, that is writing (cards or e-mail). You should mail a card to each program you interview at, and then shift to e-mail. You are more likely to get a response back from an e-mail, so then you can truly develop rapport.

If you are good at talking to people on the phone, place some calls as well. Generally the program director is most influential in selecting residents, so make him/her your #1 target. For programs you are particularly interested in, also talk to the dept. chair and the docs who interviewed you in search of bonus points.
