hey ... I've already finished my 3rd year and next month I'll begin my SURGERY rotation I'm so excited about it ,,, but the problem is which book should I read to cover the most important topics & to get a good mark in my exam !!!
in my faculty they Recommend Baliey & Love ,,, I think it's for surgeons not for a 4th year Medical student !!!
Surgical recall is a must and I know it ...
any help & advice will be appreciated 😀

Essentials of General Surgery by Lawrence is commonly used by US medical students.

While Bailey and Love may be recommended to you it is rarely used in the US even by attending surgeons.

Depends on what your exam is based on. Surgical recall is good for pimping questions. As you aren't in the US, I have no idea what your exam is based on, and can't give more specific advice.

Echoing this. Recall is great for pimp questions, but not enough for the shelf. Pestana is solid.

Surgery was one of few rotations where I got a High Pass / A.

Kaplan Surgery Vids + Pestana Notes + NMS Surgery Case Book
Surgery Recall (pimp q's on rounds & in O.R.)
UWorld - surgery and some medicine questions
Step Up to Medicine (various sections to help boost "medicine" knowledge since a surprising portion of the shelf was more medicine than surgery)

Surgical recall is horrible. I can't believe people recommend reading this book. It's terribly dry and you won't remember a single thing from it.

*shrug* I got a lot of pimp questions correct because of it. It's great to skim over before a case or rounds. It's definitely not something you should study from in terms of the shelf.

The goal of Surgical Recall is not to remember the information from it for the shelf. I would definitely not recommend ever reading it cover to cover.

The goal of it is to take 5 mins to read about whatever operation you're walking into. Most of the time (unless your attending likes questions out of left field, which nothing can prepare you for), the attending (if he/she pimps you) will ask you something that is in surgical recall.

Of course your experience may vary.

As EvillBooYaa clarified above, the book was a LIFE SAVER in preparing me just before going into the O.R. - it helped me appear as a student who actually read up on patients and cases. I have even overheard my attending's partners commenting on my preparedness and apparent intelligence.

Over 60% of our rotation grade was from the attending's evaluation and grade - I strongly believe this book was a vital part in helping me obtain a favorable eval and an A from my attending.

So, once again, I will strongly recommend it as a white-coat companion during your surgery rotation.👍
