I know there are some soccer fans on this forum. Anyone else pretty happy with the US's draw for World Cup 2010? If the US can't beat Slovenia and Algeria, I might swear off the national team forever. England-US will be a sweet game to watch, too!

Much better draw than last time around. Though to be totally honest, we should've beaten Ghana in the 3rd group game and advanced ...

England fans have to be happy too ... a couple of (relative) patsies and a chronically inconsistent US team.

I like our chances to get out of the first round, but the team has no depth. If anyone gets hurt, forget it.

USA must try to beat england instead of going for a draw and winning the other 2

because if they dont ....GERMANY will most likely face them in the knockout rounds. However germanys group doenst have any patsies so they might finish 2nd, however the US must do everything to avoid facing them. DAS BLITZKRIEG will finish off the US team easily

Oh yeah, agree on all counts. Ghana has Essien who's very good, but still, overall that should've been 3 points.

England definitely should be happy, as they're virtually a lock to breeze through the first round.

On depth, I agree that Bradley's already scrambling some. Davies going down for a year or more was a pretty big blow to our offense. An Altidore-Davies offense would've had some threat. Conor Casey is just a MLS-grade bruiser who throws himself around with no finesse. Can't believe he'll end up playing in the World Cup. Davies had some good vision (assisted on one of the goals vs. Brazil) and seemed to me to have the speed and finesse needed to play on that level. We'll see how that turns out.

I'd say USA is EXTREMELY lucky to be drawn with Algeria and Slovenia. But let's not forget Slovenia kicked Russia out of the playoffs and Algeria did beat Egypt. England is going to kill US in the first game (if they don't play Beckham) and we'll have to see how the US team recovers from the loss and play the next 2 games.

My prediction for USA-England:

80% chance they thoroughly dominate us and send us out of the stadium crying with a 2 or 3 goal loss.

20% chance USA scores 3 unanswered goals in the first 45 minutes (ala Portugal 2002) and hangs on for the win.

or scored 2 goals in the first half and hangs on until the 2nd half and loses by 1 goal ala the previous game vs. brazil.

🙂

anyhow, i have hope for next year U.S. roster.👍

The draw was pretty even this time around. no "group of death", but portugal vs. brazil is going to be an awesome game to watch.

We got a great draw for sure.

Do we have a great team? EFF no!

I know England's good and all, but there's not ONE outfield position where we're even CLOSE to matching up man-for-man. We got Timmy in goal but that is about it. It's gonna take some serious cojones, and a bit of luck, to get even 1 point from that game. I wanna see the US team busting their asses training above 5000 feet ASAP -- that's maybe ONE advantage we can get since the English players will all be at sea level (racing Drogba and the like ) until May

It was about as good a draw as we could have hoped for. We are clearly the second best team in the group, which wouldn't be true in many of the groups. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, we are inconsistent and injured.

Onyewu and Davies are huge losses, even though Onyewu was pretty inconsistent over his last few games, he was going to get some great experience in Italy this year, and could have anchored the back reasonably well. As for Conor Casey, all I can say is that he is better than Brian Ching.

I'm seriously debating going down to South Africa for the round robin games, and I will be p*ssed if I spend money to root for a team that uses Brian Ching regularly, like the U.S. has for the past couple of years, before Altidore and Davies started stepping up.

Maybe Freddy Adu will realize some of his potential.

Really, we have a chance at beating England, but we'll have to take our chances. John Terry is definitely slowing down and has shown he can be beaten by pace (which is where Davies would have come in). I guess Landon will have to cowboy up and not cry when he gets knocked around.

Yeah, I decided that South Africa was just a bit too far, and too devoid of anything non-soccer-related to do between games. Will be watching this one from home.

Brazil 2014 will happen about 1 month after I graduate from med school and go until after I start my intern year. I'm definitely going until like 3 days before I become an intern.

Will I see you gents there?

in my OP, Landon is the best player we got. If our team got about five Landons, we're golden.👍

Better book your hotel now! 😀

Nicely said.

As far as Landon not crying - yea, we'll see about that. He couldn't even handle the intense glare of the Bundesliga and came back to MLS with his tail between his legs. I have never seen a reason to believe in his will to win.

That said - he's still probably our best player, no disrespect to Clint, but ever since Fulham got semi-good he's not starting very regularly anymore; as opposed to last season when they were fighting relegation and he was a consistent starter - coincidence? 🙄

I would LOVE to see Jozy have a breakout Cup and get himself a ticket to a decent 1st-division club in Spain, England, Germany, etc.

well stated ftf👍

I doubt it; my service obligation to the Navy is up summer 2014, so the current most likely plan calls for moving, a new job, and assorted other life changes then, so I think I'll be busy.

I won't be too busy to watch the games or gripe about another 4 years of unrealized potential though.

No doubt about it, Landon is probably the only field player we have that would even get a sniff at the national team in the top-10, right now.

That's why he has to be the leader for us to go anywhere past round 2. I think we can get out of the group in a fairly straightforward fashion.

As for Brazil 2014, I know I'll want to go, but I'll hopefully be in the last part of a critical care fellowship about then, so we'll see.

USA underestimates Slovenia at its peril...

Oh, and I am looking forward to Landon's loan spell to Everton. Will be interesting to see if he gets any playing time and what he does with it.
