A friend of mine who applied to nursing school was placed on the alternate list. She decided to go to orientation anyway and signed in. Turns out six people didn't show up and the people from the school asked who she was because she wasn't on the list. She said she was an alternate and wanted to go to orientation "just in case." Well, the people at the school were impressed by her initiative and accepted her on the spot. You think this works for pharmacy school because this is a good idea in my opinion!!

I know nursing programs are impacted in a lot of areas, but I do not understand the whole concept of "lottery" admissions. It's sad to see aspiring nursing students with stellar grades, EC's and volunteer work wait... and wait... and wait... while their minimum prereq-taking/minimum grade-getting counterparts are being admitted. Why? ...because they were lucky enough to get their name pulled out of the proverbial nursing hat. 🙁

I'm sure if these programs took more care about the types of students they admit, there would be a lot less nursing horror stories (I've had an earful from my brother, who is an EMT, and my mom, who is a nurse.)... and a lot more friendlier nurses, maybe. 😳

: off soapbox :

I know that some schools (colorado) offer a summer enrichment program for people on the waiting list. From my friends who've done it, it seems that if you go to the program and actually try your chances are pretty good that they'll take you.
