Mumford

dont get carried away with the fact that anyone who can listen can be a doctor, even if they dont have credentials; rather, understand how important listening is to actually caring about people, and use it to put some action behind all your rhetoric.

I would recommend:

The Doctor...not yet on DVD though. :/

Mumford was a good movie though but it didn't make me think about what it takes to be a Doc...heck, I think Doc Hollywood was more inspirational than Mumford. 😉

"Gross Anatomy" is a good movie.

I have "The Doctor" on VHS and it is a good movie. I am also waiting for it to come out on DVD. According to Amazon.com's website, it will come out on February 24, 2004.

I am currently waiting for "Getting In" to come in the mail. I heard it was a good movie. I ordered it used off of Amazon.com. It only comes on VHS currently. It is a medical horror film about pre-meds who go through extreme measures to get into medical school.

I havent watched "Patch Adams" but ive heard its a good movie as well.

Hannibal, Red Dragon or Silence of the Lambs. These are all great films about a great doctor!

....and unusual, yet delicious, cuisine............

Sorry, forgot I wasn't in the Lounge.

definitely Patch Adams... you ALL need to see that! seriously

it made my cry (happy tears!)

Hoosiers...The epic inner battle between being the best and compromising your values. David vs. Goliath. The underdog having more fight...very inspiring if your numbers are low like mine. 😳)

"Getting In" also released under the name "Student Body"

Story about a guy who is waitlisted at JHU. He goes around killing people on the waitlist so he can move up.

patch adams is awesome!!! I've watched it at least five times and with the same enthusiasm each time. the movie is a must see for evey premed and med student.

For anyone who is interested in terminal illness or cancer and the viewpoint of a patient:

WIT

About an english prof with end stage ovarian cancer.

Of course, Patch Adams has nothing to do with real medical school. Here's a suggestion, watch Patch Adams before you start your first day of medical School, then watch it on the last day of third year. I bet your opinion of the movie will have changed completely.

But "The Doctor" is pretty good.

Breat Men ... at least, I think that's the name of the movie.

Yeah...don't say Breast here in the pre-allow wallow.

Actually not a bad movie..."Ross" David Schwimmer(SP?) from Friends is the lead actor. Interesting and historical movie about breast augmentation and the early start over in Houston no doubt.

Cool, I'll have to check out either "the Doctor" or "Mumford" before my upcoming group of interviews. My roommates will certainly make fun of me for watching them...😛 to them.

uh yeah, except i really meant that people should see mumford. theres no way that friggin patch adams, gross anatomy, whatever has as good a message as mumford.

Anything that is non-medicine affiliated.

Considering how much time i will be spending in med school next year and how much of my life is going to be spent on practising medicine ... the last think i want is to watch movies that talk about that.

My suggestion-- MD: The Making of a Doctor.

This is a two hour NOVA documentary that follows seven Harvard medical students from the first day of med school to the last day of residency. It is very interesting and well worth watching. I got the video as a gift. You can order it online for like twenty bucks.

Cheers,
DALA

Philadelphia...

Although it wasnt really supposed to be about medicine, its about the suffering and sitgmatization that can go on when a person is terminally ill or is perceived to be.

If you havent seen it, you've got to watch it

I like the Hoosiers suggestion...I caught the tail end of Awakenings lately. (I think that's the name: Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro) Its a good one.

Awakenings with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams

Hits: "ER: the Movie", "MD: the Making of a Doctor" parts 1 and 2--the second of which follows the same students at HMS through their residencies, "Gross Anatomy", and my personal fave w/ story line around med school/students, the ever creepy "Flatliners". I also enjoyed "Patch Adams", "Wit" and am waiting to see "Getting In". Someone told me about a film titled "the Interns" which I can't find anywhere.
Misses: "The House of God"--although the book was excellent, "A Doctor's Story"--while it had the potential to be a great movie about how a young black IM resident struggled between his commitment to medicine and to his young family, the writing/dialogue sucked big time, and "Young Doctors in Love"--awful.

terminal was an ok movie but the bad guys were so bad they were laughable.

I thought the movie was OK.

The "man who mistook has wife for a hat" was a much better book although i find pretty much whatever Sacks writes to be very interesting.

Any other good movies to watch related to medicine that I should see before m.s. starts in the fall? Any good movies like Gross Anatomy out there that give a look into the life of med school?

Half Baked...

but that's more extracurricular in nature.

TWO pages of posts and no one has mentioned M*A*S*H.

I am sad.🙁

Go watch it immediately so you know what to do when someone tells you "I'm the pro from Dover."

I think Patch Adams is just an overly-idealistic movie. My roommate showed it to me and I just didn't like it. It's certainly a movie that gears towards the general public that doesn't know about med school or the health care system too well.

I haven't seen anyone mention Vital Signs, with Jimmy Smits, Adrian Pasdar, Diane Lane, and Laura San Giacomo. I'm not saying it's great, but it's interesting to watch. While Gross Anatomy is about the first year in med school, Vital Signs is about 3rd year. It's supposed to show the transition into the clinical years, and revolves around the competition between two surgeon wannabes. Though not really realistic, it's fairly entertaining nonetheless. Plus, it has a young Diane Lane--'nuff said. Anyway, something to consider.

Definitely Gross Anatomy, Vital Signs, Patch Adams, John Q and Dr. Lucille

All worth a look.

Nobody has mentioned Flatliners yet. Its about a bunch of med students who actually figure out how to kill someone and bring them back from the dead . . . not one of those make you think movies so much, but entertaining never the less (stars Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt).

femdoc mentioned it a few posts back

How about:

And the Band Played On -- an excellent film about the beginning of the AIDS crisis.

and of course What About Bob? -- Bill Murray is funny.

good med movies:

1. Band of Brothers Episode 6: Bastogne

ever imagined how medicine was delivered on the frontlines during World War II...this is a great episode about medics in action

2. The Fugitive: A cardio-surgeon (Harrison Ford) is on the run after something goes wrong. This was the prequel to US Marshals.

3. Malice: Alec Baldwin stars as a surgeon who has other intentions besides performing surgeries. Nicole Kidman and Bill Pullman also star.

4. Primal Fear: psychological thriller involving the multiple personality disorder. Starring Richard Gere and Ed Norton.

5. The Cider House Rules: a drama about an unlicensed OB/GYN doing more to save his patients' lives. Starring Tobey Maguire and Charlize Theron.

6. A Beautiful Mind:

7. Philadelphia: An AIDS patient who is fired fights back. Starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.

8. John Q: yes 43 Million people in the country are uninsured. Denzel Washington will do anything to get his son the surgery he needs.

9. One Flew over the ****oo's Nest: Oscar winning drama for Jack Nicolson who fakes his psych.

10. Patch Adams: a comedy about a doc (Robin Williams) who will do anything to cheer his patients

I gotta put another vote in for Gross Anatomy. I love that movie. I wonder how many of us have had similar interview experiences...
