I've lived in the same city for about a decade and I'd like to apply to my local medical school in the future. My parent and other relatives live in the same city and they're getting on in years (mid to late 50's). In the past few years my mother has had medical interventions for some ailments which have persisted for years. In addition to having ties to the area, would staying around to see after my aging mother, in addition to having great stats, be a viable reason to apply EDP?😕

Only do it if you scores are above the average for the school and you match their mission statement extremely well. I wouldn't say that living in a city makes you a good fit nor would I say having sick relatives there makes them want to accept you. You have to be something that they want.

For early decision, you are unable to be complete at to other schools until the early decision school makes a decision?

What's to stop you from applying to other schools while you are applying early decision?

The binding agreement you enter into.

Yep. Part of applying EDP is that you are unable to apply to any other schools until they release your application ~Oct. 1st.

If I remember correctly from last year, when you select Early Decision on AMCAS you can't select any other schools. The school list disappears or something.

Anyway, I applied EDP last year and absolutely do not regret it. You can read about it on my mdapps if you want, but as far as your app goes just be sure you are indeed competitive. Maybe try talking to some ADCOMs at the school and ask them if they believe you had a decent shot at EDP. Mention your sick mother to them, but also try to have a reason for why you want to go to their school outside of that. Showing passion for the school is pretty important.
