I was just going through yellow page the other day and found out how many dentists in southern California. The listed dentists are ALOT more than all the medicine specialty combined ( including chiropractor and even vets). That is insane to me. It is difficult for me to imagine what kind of competition is it going to be after my graduation. Since I am going to Upenn, which state would be a good place to practice on the East coast. My definition of "good place" is large patient pool, diverse commmunity, not too much competition, and fairly urban. I would love to practice in California but the thought of competing against all these dentists scares me. Southern california is really saturated with dentists. Any suggestion???

Why don't you come down to Florida (if youl ike the sun). Fl needs more dentists, i heard.

Yes, I'm thinking about Florida, too. PENN prepares you really well for all state exams. So the entire US is open to us.

I think i am going to either Conn. or Maine. I love cold weather! I just can't stand the heat.

Georgia and South Carolina are nice too. Neither is oversaturated with dentists. And the cost of living is cheap, so you can buy a mansion for what you'd pay for a nice house in the suburbs in CA or FL.

I am aiming for Florida or California.

Dentist to population ratios would suggest that Maine and Nevada are good choices. But Nevada has opened its own dental school while the folks in Maine may just be hard cases who hold to their miserly yankee ways by bartering with the local blacksmiths to pull teeth when the pain becomes unbearable.

where did you get the dentist patient ratio?
Im interested in reading that

I'm glad to hear that no one is replying to this thread with a statement of "wherever I can find a job" 😱 There are so many opportunities out there that all you need to do is pick a place where you actually want to live as opposed to "where the job is." Wherever you want to practice, be it urban, rural, hot, cold, mountains, beach, etc, etc, etc. There is an opportunity for you. And the key to creating a successful practice is a little patience, and just treat your patients the way that you'd want to be treated while you're in the chair. The rest will take car of itself.

Coral Gables, Florida... that's where I eventually wanna practice !!🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Fl and Ca area always popular..I gotta admit Florida is a nice place to practice . But I wanna go to up north like Pennsylvania or other colder states even though i'm going to UFlorida dental school.. I miss pennsylvania..🙁 I hope you all get to practice whereever you choose.

I saw on monster.com there was an office in Maryland wanting an associate starting pay 150K and up to 300K for a general dentist!!

I heard from a resident here in LA that California is actually in a shortage of dentists. He said that b/c CA needs more dentists, they are trying to make it so that if you practiced in another state for 5 years, they will automatically waive the CA boards in order for you to practice. I don't know whether to believe this or not but there sure are a sh#$load of peope here in CA. On another subject, this same resident said that Nevada has the toughest boards next to CA and FL.
