So I am an Animal Sciencs major at Texas A&M. Just finished my freshman year! But I also just graded my final and got a C in second semester chemistry. I am only a freshman and I know it's early in the game but I can't help but freak out and need some reassurance. I got an A last semester in CHEM 101 but CHEM 102 was a totally different monster honestly and I struggled a lot despite studying 10x more this semester. My overall GPA is now a 3.73 (was a 3.93 last semester and is a 3.53 this semester). I took a math course this semester too and got an A so that'll bring my sGPA up but I'm just really mad at myself about the C in chem and I always hear how a C in a prerequisite is bad... I'm taking Biology and Ochem next year. I am much more comfortable with biology than with chemistry. I'm hoping I like and understand Ochem more than Gen Chem. Just looking for reassurance at this point I guess

ETA: got B's in both semester's labs

What do you think went wrong? And organic chemistry is a whole different topic. I liked it way more than general chemistry. And don't worry about the GPA. You have about 30-35 credits. That's 1/4 of the Bachelor degree. You will have enough time to raise it.

Congrats on a successful 1st year! You have a solid base to work on, and with continued effort and improvement, this C will be nothing more than a glitch on your application. For reference, I have two C's in orgo and did very well this recent application cycle.

Fellow CHEM102 hater here!! It took me a year of chem classes and two rounds of studying for standardized tests to finally comprehend gen chem...that being said, I still can't help you out with titrations. Luckily, ochem is a different ballgame and it was my favorite college course. Don't worry about this little setback. You're hardworking and smart - your grades show it! Keep doing what works to get those A's.

Thanks for the reply! Honestly, I've always struggled with Chemistry. Even in AP Chemistry I got a B by the skin of my teeth. I just cannot wrap my head around some key concepts! And sometimes I get them but if I see the same problem with different wording I won't regicnkze it and just go blank. It's literally the only subject I have ever struggled with so much! But yah I'm hoping OChem makes more sense to me and I'll just have to work harder I guess. Though idk if that's even possible seeing as I spent 10+ hours studying for each chem exam this semester.

Ahhh titrations was the worst for me too! Thank you so much!

Thank you! That makes me feel much better!

A 3.73 GPA is fine. People dont care so much about lower grades in the first few years anyways. The issue is if you had 3.9s in year 1 and 2.9s in year 4.

I thought the first part of organic chemistry was easy. The second part where we had to memorize what felt like an endless number of reactions was hell and I'm thankful to have gotten out of it by a slim margin with a B.
