I got a rec from doc. He volunteers at the clinic which I have been volunteered for 2 years. Should I open it then submit to recommendation organizing service offered by my school or don't open it?

Don't most places require it to be sealed by the original writer? Even if not, I think it's a bit unethical.

Don't open it. Immoral and also risky if your pre-med committee rejects it for being tampered.

Its not unethical, unless you agreed for the letter to be confidential. If you did, then dont.

The problem is that he only glued the envelope without really sealing it.

Don't open it. If he wanted you to read it he would've left it open. If you don't like what he wrote you may not be able to mask your disappointment around him and he may figure out what happened.

Just let go and let flow...

this cat can't be serious with this question......

Tell him you never received it. He'll send it again. Now you get to read it with no consequence.

Then again, this is from a guy with a Nicolas cage signature quote.

if you waived your right to see it, then you cannot open it. end. of. story.

no. trust me, there isn't anything bad in there....MOST people will tell you if they are going to write something bad.

Most people would just not write it, rather than write something bad.

Unless you really pissed your letter writer off and he sees writing a bad LOR as an underhanded way to get back at you . WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW?

Yes, it reflects poorly on someone professionally if they write a bad rec for you. If you didn't waive your right, then technically you're allowed to open it, but I don't really see the point; no one's trying to sabotage your med school chances. Better safe than sorry.

If you waived your right to view the recommendation, don't open it.

If you are submitting this to your pre-med advisor or to a letter of recommendation service, don't open it.

If you've been given a copy and the doctor said you can view it, then open it.

Closed recommendations are more honest.

Thank god the moral premed police are present on SDN.. What would we ever do without them? If you want to open the letter do it, its your problem if it bites you in the ass in terms of someone not taking it as official.

I don't think it is a matter of people being the "moral pre-med police." Someone asked for honest advice and people gave it.
