I hear it's still going to be pretty expensive, and since its OTC, no one's insurance will cover it. O the joy.

I've raised two kids (am raising, still raising, can't see the end of raising..). The cost is NOTHING compared to that! In my book, its cheap at twice the price!
Do you have a procedure yet? Do you have to see id to verify age? Do you require documentation like PSE?
I'm hoping we can just sell it without a whole bunch of paperwork, but that may be too much to hope for!
Also....are you able to sell the rx packaging in place of the OTC to get rid of the rx packages??? I can't see when I'd ever dispense on an rx again....

Yeah...I know that. But...I also know that if a young woman comes in who doesn't look 12 & if I don't have to document that I've looked at id (like PSE!!!) then I'm going to sell it to her.
If she appears young....I'll just write an rx & dispense it like I always do, but I'd rather not go thru that trouble.
But...I don't want to get caught by an "undercover Plan B policing agent" either.
you don't need to document the identification like you do with pse sales...by doing so defeats the whole purpose imho
We get ours tomorrow. It is $43.00 a box. Over 18 is the only requirement or restriction. No counseling requirerment or purchase amount limitations. crazy man.....
From what I understand you cannot. The rx only will have a differnt NDC and GPI code so it cannot be sold as OTC.
Due to the side effects and strict dosing, you would think there would be a counseling requirement.
oh, well.
It's harder to sell pse, a relatively safe drug, than Plan B, a drug with a number of severe side effects and careful dosing; that is sad in some ways.

I looked this afternoon and we only had two of them...
We don't move too many. We actually (because of our location) dispense more "post-abortion cocktail" than Plan B. Personally, I'd like to see it the other way around.
Well.....I didn't work today....I gave flu shots. But, last weekend I dispensed 6 packs, so I'm guessing within the last 2 days, 6 packs were replaced by the wholesaler.
What is a "post-abortion cocktail"? Methergine, ibuprofen, shot of whiskey????? I'm curious???

We just have to check ID and ring it up in the pharmacy. They have to be 18 or older for OTC sales, no gender requirements. I suspect that the cash register might ask for their DOB to be typed in like for alcohol sales. Any pharmacy staff member can complete the transaction. Those under 18 can still get the Rx version by prescription, prescriptive protocol, or by bringing in someone older than them to be the purchaser.
We can only sell the OTC labelled packages as OTC. The others will continue to be sold on protocol and by prescription. Our state medicaid program pays for them, as do most other insurance plans, so I doubt we'll be stuck with them.
There are a couple of different combos... the script is preprinted from "Women's Surgical Center" and the doctor just checks what he wants. We generally only see them during the day (clinic hours) and I don't work many days anymore.
Metronidazole is on there, amoxicillin I think, naproxen, yes - methergine, can't remember what else right now. Most women get 3-4 drugs.
in my area usually doxycycline, methergine, percocet, & ibuprofen

Barr is phasing out its current packaging.
The new packaging will be "dual" for OTC & rx. It will have sufficient labeling for OTC sales, but will have sufficient space for an rx label & ancillary labelling. There will be only one packaging eventually.
In my state....we need to verify ID - with "legal" documentation - same as for liquor & cigs...so I have to be sure everyone is over 18 - the ATF routinely scrutinizes my area...so probably the right to life folks will too. So, I guess I'll still write that rx for the under 18 crowd - unless they come in with fake ids...
However...I'll be able to get rid of my rx only stuff - I still have a few under 18's that request it (altho most of my population is 20 to early 30 something's).
Interesting.....any employee can sell it - so who knows...it may be on the regular store shelf - just like beer. It requires no consulatation at all - just ID verification. Altho I agree with it...that by this time....they don't need eduation..it is always nice to be able to encourage "safe sex"....but whatever....

And, I dunno about your states, but where I am, medicaid will definitely pay for Plan B, because seriously, imagine if they didn't. All they need is a restriction on refills....seen way too many Rx's for Plan B with 5 refills. Yeah, I'm sure you "lost" your normal bc...

Yeah...thats the downside of OTC Plan B - our county operated Medicaid won't fund it anymore. The state funded will continue funding & so will the PACT folks....but...its still worth the $40!
They are telling us it can be sold by any pharmacy employee. Regular cashiers can't ring it up and it is to be kept behind the pharmacy counter.
You made me go back & re-read my info......mine does indeed say any rx emloyee - we'll see how long that lasts!
If you can buy liquor, cigs, prophylactics-which require no ID at all (oh & go to war....!) - why for goodness sake can't you buy Plan B with proper ID? This is a complete disconnect in common sense.
Does anyone think my cashier can educate any better than any other cashier in the store (she goes back & forth between positions)!!! She is a hs graduate - or perhaps has a GED - I really don't know!

Now I feel bad for the people on medicaid who actually can't afford 40 bucks...hell some can't afford the 1/3 dollar copay. I mean, seriously, if you do think about it, no plan b = more unwanted kids, leading to more kids on medicaid...always a fun time.
In my state there shouldnt be a prob even if it is OTC; the only PPI covered is Prilosec OTC, so even retail places with OTC packaging should still be covered. Not that it matters for me, since I do outpatient, and thus, very few OTC products...which means I don't have to sell colace or rubbers or whatnot 🙂

Now in my pharmacy (and in my state) I am set up with a collaborative practice. If the person comes in and wants to have their insurance billed, I have them fill out a 2 sheet form, I talk to them, counsel them, write them a prescription under my collaborative practice doctor, and fill the prescription. So no matter if she is 14 or 34, I can dispense Plan B to the patient. If they want their insurance billed I do it, if not it's $34.94, simple as that.
So based on your state there is lots you can do!

my gyn is in another state and she's offered me a script just to have and I declined because I don't need it. But she was going to put 2-3 refills on it just in case, because I can't just stop in and see her.
I've never had to take it but I'm told it's a fantastic way to make yourself feel like ass for a couple days. I like to think that people realize that with it being more than a month's worth of BC Pills even without insurance and the crappy feeling that maybe it's not a perfect deal... who knows.
