Goverment shutdown....is anyone here feeling happy like me?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What the stupid Tea Partiers don't realize is that 1) our foreign creditors get to call the shots and 2) if public credit doesn't make up for the collapse of shadow banking then the system is doomed quickly.

It's not cause of the tea party.. They just want to hold it off a year so everyone has more time to go through it.. It's gonna cause people to lose their current doctors, insurance, and lose their jobs or get cut back on their hours

I'm kind of annoyed...what am I actually paying for?

No...no it's not.

Whatever you are paying, it's not enough. Government are like people, you give US government a dollar, it'll spend a buck fifty. :meanie:

But to be real, the government shut down would probably be of little consequences to most of us, even most of the federal employees would be deemed essential and work like nothing happened. What would be more interesting is if it last until debt ceiling crisis comes around, then that would be the time to pull out the popcorn.

Why can't we just cut funding for the military? We spend close to $500 billion a year or more, I'm pretty sure we'd still be good by cutting funding down to like $50 billion a year. No one is gonna attack us even if we don't have a military. We have plenty of armed civilians to handle that.

I'd rather have this country protected by volunteer militias than a regular army.

Some of us were planning to visit the Grand Canyon and have spent time and money arranging the trip. Now, may not be able to see said Canyon because of politicians. 🙁

Way too many hands in that cookie jar.

One of many examples: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news...-pentagon-to-buy-tanks-keep-ships-a/?page=all

Sparda,

you are totally correct. Ron Paul said the same thing. 'Bring the troops home.'

We just marched in; we can just march on out.

Not all are essential, if you dont have anything to do with the military and homeland security then you are furloughed. Also most if not all of government contractors would be furloughed as well

Furlough isn't nearly as bad as getting laid off, like in the private sector. Beside, apparently only 80% of the federal employees are "essential" and won't be affected.

Military needs to be cut, welfare/entitlement needs to be cut, heck even the government itself needs to be cut. Even then it wont be enough and we have to face the facts that some tax increase is unavoidable.

We had a trillion dollars deficit last year. If we split budget cuts and tax hike 50:50. We have to cut military, medicare/medicaid, and social security all by 20%, and then increase the taxes for everyone by 25%. Then would it be a balanced budget. Or you can cut all those programs by 40% without increase taxes, or you can pay 50% more in taxes without cutting programs.

So if the government is shut down, can I walk into the senate building and claim a seat?

So the IRS is shutdown. Time to pay NONE OF THE TAXES!

Lol, nowadays they can just sit home and hit the botton and you will be dead.

I like how we employ non-essential people. In the private sector being told you are non-essential is a very bad thing.

Dido. It takes 2 to dance. Some times a single party system like China works better, just do what needs to be done whether you like it or not.

We should not have a 2 party system. Pretty sure G. Washington said something about not having a two party system in his farewell address.

We don't have a 2-party system.

So Canadian news outlets are saying there's delays at the border. Canadians are cancelling shopping trips.

We visit your country 4 to 5 million times per month. But I'm sure your economy is healthy enough to take such a minor hit.

Military spending is actually over 1 Trillion.

For 2013 DOD base budget 532 B
Overseas Contigency Ops 88B
Nuclear Dept of Energy 19B
Military Retirement costs 27B
International affairs 70B
Veteran Affairs 137B and climbing fast
Homeland security 46B
plus what is stolen from other agencies such as HUD, Education, Transportation, etc. and the interest expense

We don't have a 2-party system.

Yes, we have many parties but the problem is that no one really consistently votes outside Democrat or Republican.

I think this whole shutdown business is pretty much gonna destroy the Republican party. Then hopefully the Democratic party becomes the main Centrist-Right Wing party and a new Left Wing party will arise.

800,000 people are sitting home right now and not getting paid. My sister is one of them. And they can't use vacation time to make up the time in their paychecks. People have bills to pay! And it will affect the economy in lots of ways because there are a bunch of private contractors that depend on govemernt funding for their jobs too. And what about all those places around government agencies that get frequented by people that go out to lunch everyday? Some of those places get their revenue from the lunch crowds only.

I agree with that bit. It is a huge miss-step for them.

Yes, When an excepted employee is not working or not performing excepted activities in compliance with the Antideficiency Act, he or she cannot be in a pay status. If you call in sick or take vacation, it is all unpaid leave during a furlough period.

**It is different for uniformed service members.

so 800,000 people are going to have problems paying their mortages and bills if this shutdown lasts for more than a couple days.

In case you don't watch the news, our government is currently shut down due to disagreement between political parties in budget talk. So what's the big deal ? NOTHING. This, to me, is a paid vacation for the congress....Easy money.
This is what will be happening next:

1. Government will resume business as usual.
2. Debt ceiling will be raised (even much more than the previous one before to avoid future shutdown).
3. Stock keeps rising.
4. Debt bubble bursts
5. Gold/silver skyrockets up.
6. Inflation/interest both go up. Your 5 dollar foot long subway will be 20 dollars.

so 800,000 people are going to have problems paying their mortages and bills if this shutdown lasts for more than a couple days.

No. Nothing is gonna happen. Relax. This is just a paid vacation for them....Everyone will be paid after...mark my words...and debt ceiling raised again.

I love the shutdown, hope for fiscal cliff Oct 17 and another credit downgrade. 😍 I want at least 10% stock market correction, so I can buy more stocks on the cheap. Dow 14,000, yes please.

dow will hit 8000...don't rush..

If the us keep on the unsustainable expenditure course, the true worth is probably less than that. Better bite the smaller bullet now that getting blow to tiny little pieces down the road.

Lol, just heard of this syndrome for the first time, has anyone heard of it before?

Washington Monument Syndrome

Well, that explains why they had to shut down the panda cam. I was scratching my head why they had to shut down a web cam that just sits there.

Only 10%? Im anticipating the 20% market correction that has been long overdue

I have 3 stages plan:
1. Dow <14,600 - Buy some at resistance level
2. Dow <13,700 - Another resistance level - All spare money in
3. Dow <10,500 at uncharted territory - Sell all my muni bonds and back up the truck to load up on stocks, making me 100% in stocks
