I need some advice from you guys.
I will be applying this summer and need to decide between a B or a P in immunology.
Ok, so I am taking bio3, microbio, ochem lab2, and immunology + an elective this semester.
I am 99% sure that I will be getting a 4.0 this semester if I take a P in immunology.
I have a B in immunology right now and I just found out that getting an A is very unlikely. (almost impossible unless I get 100% on the final)🙁
That said, I have an option to pass or fail the course, so that AADSAS does not count that GPA when verifying my transcript.
So, I have 2 options
Option A) Take a P in immunology
- I will have cum 3.2536, sci 3.2813, and bcp 3.56 after verifying
- For the semester, I will have 4.0 (high honor's)
Option B) Take a B in immunology
- I will have cum 3.2465, sci 3.2647, and bcp 3.52 after verifying
- For the semester, I will have 3.73(honor's)
The calculations were done assuming the rest of the classes are 4.0
I know that it's not much of a difference but I wanted to know the best option.
I have not taken the DAT yet, I will be taking it on 7-1.
My sci and cum GPA are horrible and I know that. I am not making any excuses but I had rough years in the first 2 years. (2.1 in the first 2 years)👎
However, after 2 years of Amry experience, I turned it around and have gotten better ever since. 4.0, 3.4, 4.0, 3.8.
I would appreciate your thoughts..

I always understood taking a class P/F to be the best option only if you are in danger of getting a really bad grade (like a D). But A B is a good grade in a tough class! You calculated the difference and your GPA with the B is barely any different from your GPA with the P. I would take the B and be proud of it!

Do you really want the dental schools to wonder if you took the P because you were on the verge of getting a D?

I agree with the post above. Taking B is the way to go. Barely affects your GPA.

By the way, your GPA shows a great upward trend (which dental schools love to see) and you will probably be able to write an impressive personal statement with your experiences. It is sad to think about giving up that 4.0 for the semester, but in the broader picture, I think it will look much better for you. Also, you never know: you very well could get 100% on the final. Or perhaps no one in the class scores well enough to get an A, so the professor curves the final grades. Don't give up yet!

Thanks for your thoughts.
I guess I will have to stick with a B.
I really wanted to show a 4.0 right before applying but immunology is immunology..it's not even comparable to biochem or anatomy...sigh..:scared:
I think it is by far the most difficult course in undergraduate.
BTW, with my low gpa, would schools even open up my application packet? if not, they will have no idea about the upward trend.. or improvements over time..
any thoughts?

If i see a P on a transcript I immediately assume it was a C (lowest passing grade). I would also assume the person didn't learn much at all because it is usually easy to pass.

your gpa is low, but as long as you do pretty good on dat your fine. you probably need a 20+ and youll be ok. just apply to a bunch of schools. also put things you find around your house into the supplemental application, or additional fee envelopes. i put in like bottle caps, pins, pieces of hair, fuzz, my fingernails just to seem like an interesting candidate. they wont forget who you are if your the only person doing this. try to stand out every chance you get.
