Someone told me that when applying to a D.O. school they calculate your GPA differently than the way AMCAS does. If you fail a class the D.O. system accepts the highest grade achieved in that class rather than the way AMCAS does it by total points/credits attempted. Is this true?

They grades do show up though and are taken into consideration.

It wouldn't count in your GPA that they first see, however you do send them your transcripts and the old grade is there. It won't carry as much weight as your new grade, but they take into consideration that you took it twice.

Is it true that if you had a crappy UG but an aewsome Grad GPA and it has been some time in between both with life experience, they look at this favorably?

Sure. DO schools tend to view the whole applicant, and are more likely to accept "non-traditional" students.

Q, DO

That was my experience exactly-- if I can get multiple acceptances, there is hope for everyone! My UG GPA was terrible but with life experience and demonstration of improved, upward trends in post-bacc and grad school, I'm in!

Osteopathic schools in general are known for looking at the overall picture but I've heard that there are a few allopathic schools that also try to look at the big picture.

Best of luck!
