Which one do you guys think is better? GPA of 3.7-3.9 from a good school like UCB,UCLA,or ivies but dat of 19-20 OR GPA of 3.5-3.7 from the same school with dat of 21-23? lol, essentially which one will get you into the top school? There appears to be more of a DAT trend from the avg but not sure. Comments?

I would say the 3.5-3.7 with 21-23 because it shows that your GPA isn't inflated and that you are actually good at the basic sciences needed for D school. But you would probably get in almost everywhere with either set of scores

If by "top school" you mean Harvard or UCLA, their average acceptance GPA is around 3.75 and DAT is around 22... so I would say both.

Well basically, you're either on the dot in terms of GPA and a little low with dat with the top schools or on the dot with dat but a little low on gpa. Which would you think is better?

Haha.... Good answer!

I don't get it. 😕
If you have a 3.7+ in Cal, then you won't have a low DAT.

I see, your trying to choose your major.
Science major or non-science major...

lol i am actually in that position... My gpa's good but I suck at standardized testing. So yea... it can happen lol.

My personal opinion is that standardized testing is king; if you can do well on a multiple choice test in a classroom you should be able to do just fine on one at Prometric.

This is a worthless debate. Some schools may value GPA more, and some DAT. But none of us REALLY know exactly what each school looks for. Do well on both and it wont matter either way. good luck.

=) you'll see a lot of these on sdn....

Well, quite a few schools got their own "formula" and they have been posted on SDN before. Therefore it is possible for us to know exactly what they are looking for.

For example, UNLV.

I'd say the lower gpa and higher dat. SOme schools have easier versions of classes, some people lucked out with easier teachers and tests, and some give out easy As. So someone that is smarter than another person could have a lower gpa, but just had bad luck.

But with a higher dat, it shows a true standardization among all students. So all those factors that are affecting gpa aren't here.

For instance, in my O chem 2 class, the teacher used all recycled questions from old tests, so all we had to do was memorize them. We could do well even if we didn't understand a thing, so obviously kids from my class are going to do better than kids in another class whose teacher picks complicated brand new problems on tests. That's why we need the standardization of the DAT.

What about different versions of the DAT?
Some might had a bad luck by getting the ethics passage (like me😡) while some got all three science passages.

That's true. I also had one that had like a billion small paragraphs. The whole pt. is I really wanna go to a cali. school but I don't know if my dat's are good enough 🙁

obviously, it's not going to be perfect, but it's the closest thing to standardizing students. I agree that some tests are harder for some people, but easier for others, but they can't cover anything, the testmakers do their best to make them at equal levels of difficulty, while schools don't discuss with other schools how to make classes more equal.

But not all classes are equal at one school either.
How can it be possible that all the classes at any college/university be easier?
Also, then how would you compare different majors either?

That's bad luck why now?

unless you had it, you'll never know. all i can say is that is was brutally long and confusing. i had 23-25's on all RC practice tests, was briefly a lit major in college, and consider myself to have strong reading comp skills. ended up with a friggin 18 on RC and i am considering a dat re-take.

i'm on the other end of the spectrum. Low GPA and pretty good DAT scores. TS was 20 with 23 in Bio, 19 in Chem and 20 in Orgo. GPA is crap though. 2.5 in the sciences. i'm trying to figure out what my chances are looking like when I apply. I'm hoping applying early will help?

I had the same one! I ended up with a 16 😡😡. My RC score was one of the biggest reasons why I didn't get to any schools with my TS of 20😡.

"Ability to read, organize, analyze, and remember new information in dental and basic sciences" (ADA)

The ethics passage had nothing to do with dentistry or basic sciences.👎
Maybe we should sue them 😀

Chances are what kept you out was a low gpa and mediocre (mean) AA not your RC score.
