GPA question
Started by Ferocity
When applying, every single course grade post-high school will be counted. Those grades will definitely effect your GPA.
So long as your cGPA (including these grades you posted from Devry) is 3.0+, I would suggest a special master's program (SMP) to boost your grades and demonstrate your ability to handle the medical school course load. Search this forum for SMP information. Good luck.
EDIT: I didn't see you were considering DO schools. That application service practices grade replacement, so if you retook any of those classes in which you did poorly, I believe only the most recent grade will count in the application's GPA calculation.

I did not retake any of those classes because they are all computer/business related

I am most concerned about the the NO CREDIT courses at the bottom of the transcript. Under footnotes, for 11, it says this:
I'm hoping that since UMD doesn't see these as credits for any degree, that they wont be counted towards my GPA. All of those D's would tank my GPA way below a 3.0
I really don't want to do a Masters or SMP program...
- 11 - No credit towards any degree in the College of Business and Management

Nobody cares how many credits University of Maryland gave you. You need to get your official transcript from Devry sent to AACOMAS.
Unfortunately for you I doubt Devry put those classes down as 0 credits and they WILL count against your GPA
Can anybody else chime in?
Could I argue that Devry wasn't accredited and therefore is a technical school that shouldn't count towards my bio degree. 😕
If that doesn't work and I wanted to replace my grades from Devry, could I take similar classes at a community college instead to completely replace them?

Google is your friend.
Short answer: No.
Long answer: You can replace the grades by retaking them at a CC (if they are offered) but the courses need to be equivalent. DO schools allow you to replace the lower grades w/ the new ones if the courses were equivalent (i.e., essentially the same course regardless of institution). Arguing DeVry wasn't accredited would be untrue (it's accredited as a trade school).
Sorry, dude. You're kind of SOL on this. You're going to need to retake courses and, in all honesty, your 3.2 UG GPA (excluding all of this history) would be only marginally competitive for DO to begin with (without a very strong MCAT). You probably need to retake some courses to get your GPA up above 3.0 (overall -- incl. DeVry) and then apply to an SMP program and ROCK it (straight As... no semester below 3.8). If you do that and then get a good (30+) MCAT, you should be competitive for DO. Good luck!
I think you could pretty easily retake the algebra and composition classes, as long as the retakes are the same or greater number of credits. That transcript is somewhat misleading because it says "no credit" for several classes, but AACOMAS will still want to know the # of credits they would have been worth if passed.
Culture & Society may be similar to a sociology class, but it's also hard to say with no department prefixes.
It would be a good idea to get the course descriptions from the catalog the year you attended and see if they match up to courses available at a CC. You don't need to worry about the W's, and many of the other classes look too specific to Devry to retake.
I have a similar problem. When I was much younger I thought I wanted to major in computer science. I ended up not being very interested in that, so I quit going to classes and ended up with F's. I don't think I would even be able to retake a UNIX class now if I wanted to, so I'm just making up for it with A's in all my classes since returning.

I dont know if this will help you, or cause you more questions.
I had a similar situation with "Trade" schools (Paramedic and Fire School at private schools that are not considered accredited post secondary insitutions). I still had to list them in my application, and send in transcripts to AACOMAS. Ultimately AACOMAS did NOT include them in my GPA calculations, but the classes still show in my app (sucked for me because I lost ~60 hours of 4.0 credit!). There is not guarantee one way or the other in these situations, and talking to the folks at AACOMAS was of little help (but still give it a try!). The best advice that I can give is to try and get someone on the phone at AACOMAS, and see what they have to say on your situation. More than likely they will tell you that you must report and submit these grades, and then they will make a case by case decision after you have submitted you primary application.
Best of luck!

Little to harsh there? i thought having a 3.2 isnt the end of the world
Man when I was taking some classes at DeVry in NJ it was just a joke. I would just sit on my laptop and bs. Try checking out your local cc and see if they have classes that are equivalent. I know mine does because I realized a lot of kids went from cc to DeVry to get their engineering degree or whatever it was. That school is too darn expensive too, I just liked the 8 week courses since you were able to finish a whole bunch of credits in a small amount of time.
I agree with everyone about the masters, that might be your best bet unless you want to go back and retake those classes. I believe the online version of those classes are cheaper, Check it out.
Good luck

Did you read the op?
His 3.2gpa is more than likely not his true GPA and will be deflated once he adds quite a few Cs,Ds,and Fs from a previous institution.

I'm pretty sure DeVry is accredited now, since it is a University now. Not sure about all of the other branches out there but the one by me is.
Well... at this point I'm figuring out if I can retake some of those classes at a community college. The problem is that Devry inflates the credit hours on these classes. Every university and CC counts a programming class as 3 credits, where Devry counts it as 4 or 5 credits... I'm waiting for an official transcript from Devry and a response from AACOMAS to see what happens.
If that doesn't work out then I might take a semester of dull classes at CC, such as basket weaving 101, to balance out those grades.
Last resort, I go for a Masters or SMP - I'd really prefer not to. At this point, I'll consider the Carib if no DO school accepts me for 2011 cycle. 😳
Certain classes I already have retakes, which I'm awaiting confirmation from AACOMAS:
Algebra is replaced by this: INTERM ALGEBRA A 0.00 No Credit
Culture and Society replaced by: SPAN222 CULTR DIFF LATIN AMERICA B+ 3.00 3.00 9.00 HL D
Composition hopefully to be replaced by English 101

Almost every school is accredited by some random agency, but only some of these agencies are recognized as being able to accredit colleges and universities. My trade schools were "accredited," but they were not SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) accredited. I do not know enough about the differing accrediting agencies across the country to be able to speak with any authority about which ones are good, and which ones are not. Ultimately it will be up to AACOMAS and AMCAS as to whether or not the grades will count towards the OP's GPA. Even if they do not use the grades in the GPA calculations, they will still show the grades on your courses taken page.

Couldn't you retake through Devry/Phoenix? Heck they might even offer some of these online now and though they ask an exhorbent price, it would seem doable to repeat ALL (if you need to) over the summer/fall.

Not sure about AACOMAS but when I transferred to a cc the credits transferred over and now they are transferring over to my four year college. I'm not sure how AACOMAS works with these schools but your right its up to them to accept the credits or not.
I've decided to pursue a master's in public health. I'm going to try and finish a two year program in one year to show my dedication and ability to work hard. This way I have the opportunity to apply to both MD and DO schools and maximize my chance of getting into med school.
