Just found this data sheet from PTCAS that looks at applicant stats from the 2013-2014 cycle and is a pretty comprehensive look at who is getting accepted to PT school. It looks at applicants' primary institutions, state of residency, LORs, majors, # of applications, etc...

Thought I share the fun find for anyone who is big into knowing stats.

Thanks for posting this, I've looked at it before but don't know if I ever posted it up. I don't think enough applicants are actually aware that this exists. It will be interesting to compare when the 2014-15 one comes out in a few months.

Second this, I'd like to see the stats for this cycle. If I'm reading it right, it looks like over 30K people created applications, but only a little over half that actually submitted their applications. Other weird things I saw: no one who had studied chiropractics previously received offers (only like 6 people), and 2 people applied to 73 schools (and received 3 and 5 offers respectively).

73 schools!?!??! That is one RICH, desperate m*tha f***er... LOL! (pardon my French) . But hey, he got in.
True, there was one poor person who applied to 61 schools and didn't get an offer.

It is really sad. I can't even fathom spending that much and not having it pay off even a little bit.

I can't say I feel that bad for that person. If you are applying you should know enough about the process to realize if you are so unqualified that you can't get into 60 schools. That person had a major, glaring red flag or did something pathological to not get an acceptance.

Yeah talk about "spreading a wide net". If there was a button that said " select all and drain my bank account " that person would've done it 🙂

I would love to hear the story behind that one...yikes...
I would to. I do know there are people who apply that don't even come close to meeting the minimum qualifications for any program. Happens every cycle unfortunately.

People act like going to PT school is like getting a CNA certification or something. "I have a 2.6 and got 13th percentile on the GRE? I can totally go to PT school, they will look past that stuff because they can tell I really want to be a PT. And I have really good LORs and worked as a tech so I'm pretty much golden."

:arghh:

Though the process of getting into PT school is one of the biggest sucks that has ever sucked, to some extent I'm glad it's difficult to get in. There are hundreds of people who apply every year who I sure as heck don't want being our future colleagues if they can't even read what the minimum entrance requirements of schools are.

I hope I highlighted the quote I wanted correctly (first sentence, second paragraph) because that was hysterical! True, but hysterical!

I don't know if anyone has ever shared this information: I was told by a program director a couple years ago that DPT programs can see how many schools you've applied to and which schools you've been accepted to. When people " cast a wide net" it could give the impression that the applicant was too lazy to research programs.

Quick question for anyone. If I'm planning on applying for the spring/summer semesters of 2016, do I fill out FAFSA now? I'm not sure how that process goes, it's been a while. Since I don't have a school yet, do I wait?

Sorry for being off topic, but figure this question would be answered rather quickly.

I've never gotten totally clear on this...my understanding though is that up to this point they've only been able to see other schools you've been accepted to once they've accepted you...but I think as of this upcoming cycle they are gonna make it more like med schools apps where they can see your status at all your schools regardless...again I'm not totally sure, ptcas has kind of ambiguous wording.

I've had a couple of schools ask me to name all of the other schools that I applied to as a part of their supplemental application. "For research purposes." I didn't apply to 60+ but still... Most uncomfortable question ever :lame:. So yeah, they probably don't know..while you are applying, at least lol.

That's so bogus. I hate that.

That was Nova right? I felt the same way haha

Or it is very possible that they are testing your honesty. As a police officer I asked people questions I already knew the answer to in order to see how honest they were. It would stand to reason that a PT program would also.

Western also asked for the other schools to which you've applied. Not sure why they need to know. All the schools are of utmost importance to me 😀 If I want to spray and pray, they don't need to know.

Yes. Spring and Summer 2016 are considered part of the 2015/2016 academic year so you will need to fill out FAFSA now. for those terms. You will have to wait about 10 months before you can fill out your FAFSA for Fall 2016.

Bummer. I would consider spending the fall semester at your local community college retaking any pre-reqs you didn't get at least a B in. If you can get that pre-req GPA to >3.5 that will increase your competitiveness significantly. You should also consider a 3rd GRE retake, although I'd say don't do it until you are consisently hitting much higher marks on practice tests. Your second score only being 2 points higher in each category than your 1st doesn't look great. I'd say retake with the aim to raise each section by 5 or 6 points at least. Also, if you never did end up getting any inpatient hours, that should be priority, especially acute care hospital (which can be a major pain to set up, so best to get started soon). Best of luck to you, hope it all works out.

Thanks EVERYONE, here on SDN!!! This forum of Pre-PTs has been the utmost supportive team throughout my journey here. I cannot describe the sheer gratitude I have for all of you, especially for a select few. This forum really does help each other out and want each of us to succeed. All of us understands each other and knows what we're all going thru... I hope we all pay it forward in the future. Thanks everyone once again!!! I cannot wait to start this FALL!!! 😀 YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!!

@DjT3kN congrats on the move up to ACCEPTANCE!!!!!!!:highfive::soexcited: Still waiting on my three schools waitlists but I think I'm going to start getting my stuff ready from my second year applying. This first cycle was more of hey let's try and see what happens (had pressure from outside sources to give it a shot and there's nothing to lose but a bunch of money 😵ha) second cycle I think Ill feel more confident but not excited to write on all of those supplemental apps about how I improved my applications.

What three schools are you wait listed at?

@Cpetrydpt Thank you! It was a long grind but it all paid off. I'm rooting for you to get off your waitlists as well. I'll be watching the thread for your acceptance soon! But I'm glad to hear that no matter what happens, you're already preparing before hand and I believe that's key. Don't worry, I know how you feel about doing a second cycle but in the end, it'll all be worth it. Good Luck!

So this is my first time posting on the blog, although I've been following people's stories of successes and disappointments and I finally decided to just put my stats up here and hear your thoughts.

University: California State University, Northridge (CSUN)
Major: Kinesiology Exercise Science
Overall GPA: 3.66 (PTCAS)
Pre-req GPA: 3.66 (PTCAS)
GRE: 151V 146Q 4.0AW

Volunteer: 80 hours in outpatient clinic plus 1-year academic internship at the CSUN Center of Achievement Through Adapted Physical Activity (I implemented aquatic and land-based therapeutic exercises with special needs clients; this was HANDS ON!!)

Applied: Chapman, Loma Linda University (LLU), University of Washington (UW), University of Puget Sound (UPS), University of North Dakota (UND)

Interviews: LLU (10/19/14)

Acceptances: N/A

Rejections: Loma Linda (1/21), UND (1,24), UPS (2/2), UW (2/18)

Waiting List: N/A

Still waiting to hear back from Chapman. They sent me an email on 4/2 saying "There is no specific deadline for decisions; it is on a rolling basis. Currently, our class is filled, but we still could send out acceptances. Also, we are dilegently working on sending out waitlist and ineligible letters. The waitlist remains open until the program begins." Not sure what this means for me though.

I had 3 strong letters of rec from professors and my TA at the Center of Excellence, however I didn't get a letter of rec from a DPT so I'm guessing that affected my application? I'm seriously frustrated that I haven't been accepted anywhere and the wait with Chapman is agonizing!!!

If I may suggest if you have to do a second run at the application cycle, try to get more observation hours at different settings. That will greatly help strengthen your resume. Additionally, not getting a LOR from a licensed DPT may have hurt your resume significantly. Most programs I've applied to needed at least 1 LOR from a PT and the other from 1 professor. Make sure when you volunteer at your PT facilities to get acquainted with the PTs you're working with; have them know your face, your name, and see your interest in the profession. Every PT setting I was in, I did just that. As a result, I had three PT LORs to choose from (which I used all three) and my professor was more than willing to write me one, especially since I was top 5 in his class and the class clown. 😛

Don't give up hope yet, continue the grind if PT is really what you're passionate about. It took me 2 cycles before I got accepted, and I don't regret it one bit. 😀
