Hi,

I'll be applying to DO schools with a 3.72 GPA this cycle. From my understanding, if a student receives a poor grade in a class (maybe something along the lines of a C), retakes the class and then receives an A, DO schools will count the A instead of the C. I'm a little concerned that other applicants will have significantly higher GPAs, as I have never retaken any classes. Do they prefer applicants that have lower GPAs but haven't retaken any classes? Or is it just a numbers game where they see the student with the higher GPA and will end up inviting that student for an interview? Would it be wise to retake some of my classes?

Thanks

It doesn't matter how many classes you retake to get the grade you have. However you should be fine.

Your 3.72 GPA paired with a good MCAT score (507+) will pretty much almost guarantee you an acceptance. Don't retake your class and prepare very well for the MCAT.

Also, looking at the DO school stats for average GPA, they have lower average GPA than 3.72. Many of the top-tier DO programs do consider MCAT more heavily than GPA, so you have nothing to worry about.

In a related question:
1st attempt Organic chem lecture/lab : C for 5 credit hour course
2nd attempt: A for a 4 credit hour course (at different uni)

Does my second attempt still replace the first?

Technically, no. AACOMAS won't see it that way either.

However, you can try and see what happens? I don't think AACOMAS will catch it. Either way, the A will still benefit you. This is actually a YMMV situation. You're going to be inputting "0" for credits anyways from your first attempt at Organic Chemistry, but you have to put the grade you received the first time down.

Was the 5 credit hours inclusive for both (not a 4+1)? If that is the case, then like @mathnerd88 said, no.

Technically BOTH courses were 3 credit hours for the lecture. The labs were different - 2 hours for attempt #1, and 1 hour for attempt #2. So likely replaced grade for the lecture, but not the lab. Guess we'll see

Yes... Just be aware that if you submit a number of things they consider errors in entry your application could be delayed as they bump it back to you for correction. So it's always best to follow their rules. They do view labs and classes differently, so you can replace the class grade.

OP... The 3.7 makes you competitive at any DO school (assuming the rest of your app and MCAT is). So I wouldn't worry too much over a C unless a specific DO school says no C's in required courses, but I don't know of one.

Additional question:
3 hour Biochem 1st try = D
4 hour Biochem 2nd try = A

No labs with this one, just lecture. Would count for retake or not?

As long as its the same class and the retake was equal or greater units it'll replace.

Some people've told me 3 sem units will also replace 5 qtr units which I'm not sure is accurate.
