I've heard some nasty rumors before about grades in O chem being esp. important....

and my grades both semesters were C's. SO, is it really an issue? Please respond if you've had experience with the process (i.e. low orgo grades kept you out of med schools), or you know about it.

Thanks.

Aliye

Lord, I've just realized I could be freakin certified in being completely paranoid about this whole process. 😱

I don't know if poor orgo grades will necessarily keep you out of med school. I think there are way too many other things that can come into play that it is difficult to say whether or not low orgo grades were the culprit. As long as your other grades are decent or you have an upward trend in grades, you should be OK (Assuming you have good MCATs and ECs).

I received a C in orgo I, dropped orgo II (we don't do the W thing, so it wasn't on my transcript, but I told schools anyway), and took it again fall of senior year on P/F.

I interviewed at plenty of places (I think two schools in the upper-middle of my pack didn't invite me) and did OK overall, I think.

Just be prepared. I had an interviewer ask if I had a learning disability. I smiled and related how much I doubted this and got in, but the experience turned me off, causing me to never want to go to that school.

Best of luck.

Thanks for replying! I feel better now. 🙂

Just so happens I have a valid reason for those grades, and will be sure to mention it. Our O Chem prof. has a reputation for failing half the class (well, ok, D's), and only 4 ppl each semester got A's, so that C really is more like a high B in reality. Lord, that man makes me want to strangle something. Too bad he has tenure... 😡

Again, thanks guys....

I didn't think med schools allowed you to take pre-reqs P/F?? Because my life would be so much easier if you were able to lol - what's the deal with this?

Yeah, but reasoning like that just rings of "Everybody says they have the hardest o-chem class," whether or not it was true. You could apply with it, but a C is pretty low, IMO.

I think the first point here is a good one. At best, this would be an explanation for your pre-med advisor/comm. letter, rather than something you say yourself. It would also help if you could show success in similar classes (read: biochem).

In response to daedalus:
it's possible that most schools I applied to took one or both of my biochem courses in place of the second semester of organic. it's also possible that this was the reason for my two pre-interview rejections.
