Hi,

I'm currently a senior at my high school with a 3.98 GPA and I'm planning to go to med school. I'm enrolled in a program called running start, which allows high school students to take classes at a community college. I'm already accepted into the University of Washington.
I'm currently taking an English class and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a B+ in that course, since it's at college it's on your permanent record. I have a 3.96 GPA at college. Will a B+ in community college destroy my chances of getting into medical school in the future?

Thanks.

Not if you apply to the Caribbean schools.

In all seriousness, relax. You're fine.

lol.

Don't worry about it!

And don't forget to enjoy college a little bit next year.

I'm just stressing because it's a community college, not a university.

And?

I would be far more concerned that you will die of a heart attack while actually applying to medical school if a B+ gets you so worked up.

In short yes. A B+ in a community college class will not only destroy your chances at medical school, it will severely hinder you career options in life. Getting a B+ shows med schools and future employers that you are not capable of performing the easiest of tasks. Community college classes are more showing up than actual learning. If you are not able to achieve top grades in community college how can you expect to treat patients?

If a B+ from a community college course is what scuttles your application, consider yourself lucky. Or unlucky.

Do not worry about the occasional B+. Unlike high school, where 4.0 GPAs are pretty much everywhere, 4.0's in college tend to be very uncommon, and medical schools understand that.

This HAS to be a troll. If it isn't, I don't think your grades are going to hold you back from med school - common sense will.

This will even have to be explained away in your PS to Caribbean schools

Shoot for a 3.7+ cum and a 3.65 Sci+ and you are in decent shape.

Didn't you just say you were in high school...? I know the courses are at CC, but sometimes they don't transfer over into college, especially if the school you are going to is significantly better than a community college.

A State school in my area offered classes just like those, but my guidance counselor told me to stay away from them because I probably wouldn't get credit for them unless I went to that state school or a state school of a lesser caliber. You should check to make sure that they'll transfer to U Washington so you aren't wasting your time.

you still have to send the grades to AMCAS..so they will be on your amcas gpa

Not sure if your post is joking or not, but community colleges vary widely. For example, Columbus State offers orgo, which I imagine is still hard wherever you take it. (I've taken it at two schools so far. Hope I won't have to expand that pool of samples again.)

Honestly, don't sweat it.

A lot of incoming freshman (even if it's community college) struggle their first semester with grades. I have a few friends who got accepted into MD schools this year with 3.0's their whole freshman year.
If it really worries you, try talking it out with the professor.
When I had a summer class in community college a few years back, I almost got a B (I skipped a lot), but I showed interest in raising my grade and the prof also gave me extra credit. Maybe you could ask your professor for an extra credit opportunity?

You only have a 3.96 at college level?
You're not smart enough to be a doctor. Give up now.

And B+? How do you even have the guts to bring this up? Slap yourself right now for obtaining such a disgraceful score. You had shamed your family.

I had a B in a CC class from high school. So don't worry about it.

And let's try and be a little nicer, guys; the kid's in high school, so if this process is confusing to those of us going through it (and even past it), imagine what it looks like to a high schooler.

Good luck, OP! Have fun in college 🙂

Wow I didn't even start thinking about my med school app until I signed up for the MCAT! Just take classes you like and do the best you can. I'm sure you'll be rockin the med school in 4 years or so! I mean I waited until mid junior year to start thinking about how I was gonna get into med school and I got in so you should be alright if you are worrying now! You just might want to relax a bit for your blood pressures sake....😱

We just did him a huge favor by driving him away from SDN.

Every time someone asks a silly question, people love to pile on with the Caribbean/end-of-the-world oriented sarcasm...It really does get kinda old after awhile.

I'll give this guy the benefit of the doubt. You'll be fine. No one will care about your B+. Chubbs was pretty spot on with the GPA benchmarks. It doesn't really matter that it was at a CC, but do try to get as many A's as possible.

I have two uncles who are physicians and they chewed me out for an A- in Calc II. They said, "anything but a 4.0 from a CC is unacceptable". I did the math and if I get an B+ in English then I'll get a 3.9 cum GPA. If I get an A- in English then I'll have a 3.92 cum GPA.
I'm just really worried that the B+ is going to detriment to my future success.

let me just say your uncles are trying to get you to do the best you can by scaring you.
stop fretting over a B+...you will do fine. Enjoy college. DO the best you can, which sounds like u can do great, and you will be fine.

Trolls aren't too original now n' days.

HOW BOUT YOU JUX DIE

I would still drop it you can; you don't need it and it won't help your AMCAS GPA in the future (obviously it doesn't "destroy" anything).

Plus you will have more time to enjoy the rest of senior year - you shouldn't be studying at a time like this!

Rofl. Running start is legit in Seattle though in a sense that it exists. However, that program accepts anyone and kids in there miss out on most of their high school experiences.
