Hello, I am currently attending a community college in Florida. I would like to attend dental school, but I am concerned about the withdrawls on my transcripts. Let me give you a quick rundown of my transcripts
03 summer term- student success- B
04 summer term- english prep 2 - A
intermediate algebra- B
04 Fall term- english comp 1 - w
college algebra - w
general psychology- w
04 spring term - english comp 1- A
college algebra - A
general psychology- A
introductory chemistry- A
05 summer term- precalculus- A
trigonometry- B
American government- A

05 fall term spanish 1- w
Bio 1- w
himanities- W
Calculus 1- B
general chemistry 1- B
05 spring term speech-A
Bio 1-A
general chemistry 2-B
english composition 2-B

overall G.P.A 3.55

As you can see, I have withdrawls from two different semesters, and a few of them are in bio, english,and algebra. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Also, I would like to start a thread to see what grades dental or pre-dental students got in the prerequisite courses including withdrawls. Please include G.P.A and DAT scores if you have them.

why all the withdrawals, if you don't mind explaining? That'll be a question dental schools will ask. What prereqs do you want? BCP classes?

Well, I've found it very hard to find a job that will work around my school schedule, so the first semster I dropped all my classes and worked full-time so I could save up some money and go back to school full-time. The second semester I withdrew, I had some unexpected bills I had to take care of so I withdrew and got another job. The job I have now works pretty well with my school schedule, so I'm hoping I won't have any more withdrawls.

when you say BCP, do you mean biology, chemistry, physics?
Yes, those classes and English Comp.

But anyways the classes I withdrew from, I took over and got A's in all of them. How do you think admissions committees look at that?
Thanks!

You have a valid reason and you did get all A's in them when you retook them. It won't be much of an issue I think. 🙂

let me give you a rundown of MY pathetic performance in my early years:
actually there's alot.. let me give you my WORST semester

Fall 98
political science I W
elemental stats W
intro to psych W
american lit F (retook it and got a C) awesome
received ZERO credit for that semester

overall, I have 1 F, 2 D's, 4 C's, majority A's
and lets not forget the SIX W's
(i know someones gonna ask me WHY.. long story but has to do with family)

Good news:
none of these bad grades are science courses
after re-entering for science pre-reqs, I've been getting all A's...
science GPA is therefore 3.7's and cum is 3.4's... (when calculated by AADSAS and TMDSAS)

Don't be discouraged. I'm not, and my transcript looks like someone took a dump on it..
i just thoroughly explained my situation and pointed out the positive aspects. I hope to nail the DAT to make up for the mediocre cGPA.

POINT OF MY SHARING:
if you focus on ALL the bad from the past, you forget about all the good you've done and will do... focus on making things better, since you cant erase it

I'm glad to see you're doing good. I know a bad start can be overlooked by an upward trend of good grades, but there is just so many applicants to dental school who have grades that exceed the average entering dental student's G.P.A and DAT scores that I feel I will not be very competitive. I hope I'm just being pessimistic about the situation and realistically have a pretty good chance at getting in. I wonder how many applicants are really qualified who apply to dental school? How did you do in Organic-chem? I heard it's a biiiotch. I'm taking calc 2, bio 2, spn 1, humanities, this Fall.

~~~~~how did you calculate your gpa for dental school?~~~~~~~~~~
What classes are included?
dboy,
o.chem was awesome.. got an A in I and II.. i heard it was a hoebag too so i was prepared and took a lighter load when i took ochem I.. after i got used it, i took the same prof for II and took on more hours..
what it boiled down to was STUDY.. seriously.. you HAVE to study for this class.. there's no way around it..
i'm only applying in texas and they don't use AADSAS, they use TMDSAS so i'm only referring to texas schools when i say this:
i agree with how competitive application pool is.. if u look at the stats, app pool gpa and dat is much lower than accepted.. so it def shows that they're unqualified apps who are crossing fingers and hoping someone sees an F as an A
as far as science gpa calculations.. i asked TMDSAS and they said bio, chem, phys, geology, comp sci, engineering, math are "science" grades.. there's a couple more but i forgot..
cum gpa is EVERY SINGLE COURSE ever taken, ever attempted that is recorded on your transcripts.. retakes are NOT averaged or disregarded
i also spoke with an adcom interviewer.. she said gpa is the most impt factor.. dat next.. and so on.. basically the numbers play the part, initially..
i hope i answered your questions
meth,
Hey way to kick azz in o-chem! So are you saying the (w's) I got in the classes I withdrew from won't affect my G.P.A. I know they don't affect my undergrad G.P.A since they are just W's, but I wonder how dental schools look at W's. I'm wondering if I should take calc 2 in the Fall to try and raise the math part of my G.P.A since I got a B in calc 1? what do oyu think?
yeah if you withdrew, it won't affect the GPA.. they list it for dental schools but grade wise, no..
i don't kno how dental schools view them... i mean i haver3 from one semester.. and 2 the following semester.. it wasn't sporadic for me. just all lumped together.. dunno if thats good or bad..
when are u applying and for what entering class?? if it's for 2007, taking fall classes is late.. of course u update your grades but your app w/o the grades would already be in and reviewed...
i'm applying for 2007 but i'm taking courses in fall and spring 2006-07 just to learn.. it won't affect my gpa as of now or adcom's initial decisions...
