Well, I did not break the 3.0 GPA goal I had for myself for my undergrad cumulative GPA. I graduated with a 2.96 GPA. This last quarter I had all A's except for one B+. I feel like a failure. Then again, I don't think I would have broken the 3.0 goal even if I got a 4.0, so I don't feel entirely bad.

Anyway, I am still applying for a post-bacc to complete prerequisites. My cGPA will go up. Anyone else not meet their goals? How did you get over it and overcome? What MINIMUM cGPA and sGPA should I be shooting for if I am interested in attending any private dental school in CA, AZ, and NV?

I just want to really mentally prepare myself and get a plan in place to attack these courses with extreme prejudice, but I am a very goal oriented person and need a threshold to shoot for in order to help myself stay motivated.

with extreme prejudice
- Far Cry 4 reference? 😉

But yea do your post-bac, try to maintain at least 3.5 in post-bac, do well on your DAT, great extracurriculars will definitely help so work on those if you haven't started already.

How'd you know?!?! Lol.

Thanks for the advice. 3.5+ is my goal for the post bacc. I hope it brings me to an overall 3.2 GPA though.

Haha I just got FC4 for the holiday so been on it for 3 days, almost finished with the campaign (on first mission of Act 3 now)

Back to your concern, a master's program that makes you take all the upper division science classes will make you look good in front of adcoms. Think about it as a fresh page, work your behind off, as long as there is an upward trend, I think you will have a good chance to an interview (that's half the battle).

@beachbum627 , hi there!

I hate to be that guy but if you really want this you have to be the person you are describing yourself to be and get your act together. I dont know you, nor your circumstances, yet you say youre a goal oriented person but have yet to break the 3.0 mark.
You need to do a masters or a post-bacc and get a 3.6+. Also you need to kill the DAT. However, the cold truth is there is no "line" to cross to be a sure in. Do as best as you can and apply broadly and early. You need to show adcomms you want this and the only way to do that is to do it. No what is the minimum I need to get it. Good luck.

You make yourself to be "That guy"... ALWAYS lol
A 20 on your DAT and doing a masters (3.5 and up GPA) should help you get into the school you want.

Well, being that I went from my freshman year (on an NROTC scholarship) that ended with a 1.4 GPA and a drop on request from the program, to a 3.0 at my CC, and now a 3.6 average over my last 5 quarters in university, I think my attitudes, work ethic, and study habits have had the same upward trend as my GPA. I've also worked near full time hours during this time. I've also secured shadowing opportunities with a dentist around the corner from my apartment, which I plan to take full advantage of.

You are wise in stating that you don't know my circumstances because my academic background is pretty rough. But, I've worked hard. I'm proud of myself for getting my GPA up as much as I have. We all know, though, that raising your GPA is a losing battle. Each successive course counts for less and less.

Sadly, that first year of parties screwed me over. Had the time if my life, but I'm paying for it now in ways I could have never predicted as an immature kid.

Well then you know what you have to do. Kill it and well see you in dental school 🙂

I graduated with a 3.07 and a 2.8 sciGPA, that was quite a bummer. Did bad 1st 2yrs and started slowly improving the 3rd year and from 4th year to all throughout my time doing post-bac Ive been getting GPAs upward of 3.9 consistently.

How did I get over this? Reality hit me like a ton of bricks at the end of sophomore year when I realized with my grades I would most likely end up back in the same ghetto I grew up in and escaped thanks to my parents' hardwork. A surge of motivation and purpose was key. From there I had to teach myself how to properly study, since I had no clue how (in high school I got straight "A"s w/o studying b/c it was all dumbed down hard). Making my own practice exams is what I came up with and use with a lot of success.

The minimum cGPA and sciGPA you should have is a 3.2. Youll have trouble with anything less than. I managed to get to that point by taking a ton of sci classes both lower and upper lvl. Take some high lvl sci courses but dont shy away from taking easy-A lower lvl sci courses. Last semester (spring 2014) I took 21 credits: 3 upper lvl and 3 lower lvl.

I was absolutely obsessed with getting "A"s in all my classes and perfecting my application. I embraced my inner perfectionist and cultivated it further, to the point of having tunnel-vision. I did a ton of EC (including research). And in the spirit of perfection I was dead set on perfecting my DAT score after not doing well enough on my 1st time. I failed my goal and got a 24AA, not perfection, but statistically-speaking still high. My obsessive mentality and thirst for success propelled me to finally getting in in my 3rd time applying. Hell of a ride, and I regret none of it.

Wow. Awesome! That's the kind of reply I was hoping would be posted. My heart sank when I got a B+ this past quarter. I've become very protective of my GPA the last couple years. So, I understand what you mean by inner perfectionist.

Well, congrats on getting in. I hope my story ends like yours did!
