What sort of role does grandparent legacy play?

If the grandparent was a graduate of the institution or the medical school?

What if the grandparent was a tenured professor and the head of a department within the medical school?

i will have to say the second situation is a definite plus in medical school apps as it makes you legacy. but from the post above i guess it depends on the school. from my experience, my status as a leg has gotten me friendly letters, encouragement to apply, and like special interview times etc for all legacies.

My legacy status got me an interview at a school I prob. would have had no shot at without it. (but this was my father, not grandfather). But it apparently hasn't helped me with admissions (never heard back).

If your grandparent really had that big of a role at the school, I think it will help you land an interview spot but I don't know how much it will help you with an actual acceptance.

Does anyone think the answer depends on whether it is a public vs private school? If the former, would favoritism of any sort be avoided by the institution to prevent charges of nepotism/cronyism (witness current lawsuit in Chicago contending some police officers were hired due to political/etc. connections). Is it possibly better not to mention any connection in a state school application?

Why do you want lower admissions standards just because your grandparents went to that particular school? Why should these schools discriminate for a son of a doctor over a daughter of a truck driver?

You people are as bad as URMs who take these handouts/quid pro quos from the schools. Actually, I would say worse because as wealthy as the average accepted URM is, legacy applicants are even wealthier.

I can't say for certain, but I believe the fact that my grandfather attended a certain medical school played a small role in me getting an interview.

You people are as bad as URMs who take these handouts/quid pro quos from the schools. Actually, I would say worse because as wealthy as the average accepted URM is, legacy applicants are even wealthier.

Why do the children of privilege need special privileges when applying to med school. Make it on your own or do something else with your life. Affluenza is a serious childhood disease that has ruined alot of lives. Trust fund babies of the world, unite! The only thing you have to fear is the fear of losing that sleek BMW that you got as a high school graduation present.

Schools do this because historically multigenerational alumni give hugely larger donations to the school than one shot alumni. But for what it's worth, the number of legacies is negligibly low, and most legacies have competitive stats to start with. (Folks of means tend to have gone to better private schools, and have had access to tutoring, access to better ECs, etc.).
Schools don't generally drop their standards for legacies, but it helps in close calls. But if we are talking about more than a single digit percentage, I'd be shocked. This kind of competition isn't going to appreciably affect your chances.

Not sure why you are so surprised. You act like people will not take a handout if they easy access to it.
I'm quite sure you would do the same in a heartbeat!

Pop quiz hot shot, What if you're the son or daughter of a dean of admissions? and what if the dean of admissions always have the other adcom members come over for the holidays and they are like family to you. Can they reject you then? What do you do? what .... do.... you....do

Someone is having a bad day... Lighten up a little. People with power have power. What do you suggest to do? Those tax dollars go to the government. The government rewards people who give them money or have power.

Bear in mind that this is just an educated guess based on my recent experience...a friend of mine was rejected pre-interview from a med school where his father (a very prominent doctor turned very prominent politician) was an alum.
