Today I took the GRE for the first time with very little preparation. My scores at the end of the test were V 151 Q 153. I had initially planned to take it earlier in June, and I also had a study plan, however my family member became ill and passed away so I did not prepare adequately and just took the test today. To be quite honest, I'm not really sure what a "good" score is. What is the typical score of a successful applicant? I know it varies a lot, but in general.

Also, I am planning to retake it. What is the best way to prepare? I did go through the Princeton Review book, but it seemed very minimal.

My last question is when is the latest I should retake it? I wanted to get my applications in early, around mid-August or so.

Thanks!

You're marginally above the cutoff. Most schools just require 150/150.

Thanks for the feedback azimuthal. My GPA isn't the most competitive, cumulative is 3.5 and pre-req is about 3.4, so I feel that my GRE score probably should be higher. Do you have any preparation recommendations?

I recommend Magoosh and Manhattan for tips/practice problems, the ETS Powerprep II software for practice tests, and this book for vocab: http://www.amazon.com/GRE-Vocab-Capacity-2014-Edition-ebook/dp/B008BA9CUA

I take the GRE this Sunday, so I can't tell you how well they prepared me. Magoosh is amazing for math, and I haven't done too much practice for verbal at all, so I'm not sure how good it is. I've heard that Manhattan is good for their reading comprehension/essay book, but not so much for their other books.

It really depends on the schools you are applying to and their averages. 3.5/3.4 isn't bad. Find that out first, then consider a retake.

@ander120, Almost all your question can be answered by exploring the PTCAS site. Under most programs' profile pages, you will find minimum and average GRE scores & GPAs, and deadlines to take the GRE. Most schools have the last acceptable date to take the GRE about a month before their application deadline. But it varies from school to school. As Azimuthal said, your scores meet the minimum required to apply to most schools. However, you will want to find the average scores of accepted applicants, which is usually higher. For example, most of the schools I am looking admit those with scores in the 154-157 range.

As far as prep goes, I used Kaplan, Barrons, and Cliff Notes GRE Math Review. I also used Barron's vocab app for iPhone.

Your scores aren't too bad. I would call the DPT program you are applying to and ask what their minimum/average GRE scores are.

Study has hard as you can, GRE scores are important.
