To everyone who's already taken the GRE:

How hard is the Quant section? I have a hard time with math, and I've been using a Kaplan GRE Math Workbook trying to prepare, and have been getting really discouraged. There's a lot of algebra and geometry in there that I never learned in middle or high school (I'm a firm believer in public school systems, but apparently they failed to teach me an excessive amount of mathematics...)
I got the workbook because I felt like I needed additional practice (I was also using other GRE prep books and ETS material) but now I feel like there's so much that I don't know that there's not even hope to really learn it before next month....

Suggestions?????

That's a good workbook to use for math. Keep working through it, circling the questions you get wrong, and re-work them periodically until you get them correct. I also liked the Barron's book and the ETS book for practice. You just have to keep drilling yourself.

Thank you!! That at least means I'm doing the right thing- I looked into getting the ETS book, but it was sold out =(
I feel a little better about it- it's up and down most days, which makes it extra frustrating with test day approaching in just a few weeks...

Honestly, if you are having that much trouble, if you can afford it I would try to get a math tutor. It's one thing if you are brushing up on math skills you knew before but haven't used in a while, but if it's entirely new, I'd think learning it from those books might be tough/not that effective. If that's all you can afford, then yes, I'd just keep plugging away at them.

Yeah, I've thought about getting a tutor- I guess I didn't realize how severe my math skills are lacking until recently when I bought the Kaplan book. Thanks for the input- I appreciate it.

I am probably one of those odd ducks that scored higher on my verbal than math. In addition to what the above posters said, I just wanted to add that my biggest struggle with the quant section was time management. Especially if you are learning or relearning these concepts, pay close attention as you practice to your ability not only to answer them correctly, but also to answer them at a decent pace. Of course, the first 5-10 questions are the most important, but as you take more and more practice tests, see how you're doing time-wise. I thought I had the timing thing down until I got to the testing center and ran out of time with a NUMBER of questions still remaining.

Best of luck with this annoying test!

I'm a math person; I didn't even study for the math section, only the verbal. But I wish I would have taken some practice tests because time management was a problem for me, too! I definitely didn't expect to run out of time in this section, but I nearly did. I'm not trying to scare you by any means (I scored in the high 700's for math, so I didn't do poorly), but I could have done better if I had learned the pacing and taken some practice math tests.

Thanks for the advice, I started timing myself today, and I definitely have some work to do haha

I made flash cards of formulas and certain types of problems I was having trouble with. And just went over them whenever I had free time.

I haven't re-taken test yet, but for math I am working with a tutor and bought just about every math/quant exercise GRE book offered and then GRE books that have both verbal and math. I was working on this for a few months and am taking a temporary break to focus on PSY gres in 9 days. But then I will be in the same boat as you; trying to learn a bunch of math😱 Also, I take practice tests randomly to remind myself of what I haven't learned and to give me motivation to study math  Good luck with your studies!!!

Hi there,

I recently retook the GREs and improved my quant score from a 600 the first time to a 740 the second time. I ended up shelling out the money for the Kaplan course. I'm not sure if the classroom lessons themselves were helpful to me but all of the "extras" available online definitely were (there are tons of quizzes and 6 practice CATs as well)
