Does the distribution of verbal and quantitative scores matter to schools? For example a 153V, 160Q vs. 156V, 157Q - or is it just the combined score that matters? Would both these scores have a good chance at acceptance?

It varies by school, but from my experience most schools look more at the verbal section and the AW section. For example, my program didn't really even take into account the quantitative section of the test. But yes, both of those score are average to above average for acceptances.

Like snowy said, it depends on the school. The verbal and quantitative scores were worth the same at my school, but I don't think they even cared about the writing section. Other schools are different. It seems like if one score is worth more than it is more likely to be verbal that is worth more. As for those scores you mention, barring a horrible GPA that should be a pretty good score at most schools that I've seen.

As stated, it varies on the school. Usually it'll say on their admissions page whether its "combined over 300" or "Verbal 157, Quan 160" etc. Here's a spreadsheet for the schools I've looked up so far. "sheet 2" also lists their pre-reqs

There are also quite a few schools who have no specific GRE minimum, so you might just call and ask your schools of interest what they like to see.
