I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea as to how accurate the score ranges you get at the end of the gre are in comparision to your actual gre score. At the end of the GRE I took it said verbal 480-580 an quanative 560-660. Where in the scale that you were given at the end did you actually fall? Should I think I am on the low end or average? I know trying to beat the system here I just thought a few other gre test takers might have an idea.

Thanks.

This must be something with the new test. They are probably still trying to figure stuff out... so, sadly, I think you will have to wait for the official report to see how you actually did.

Not sure the OP took the new test...as the revised GRE now scores from 130-170 with 1 point increments...😕

I have a friend who took the revised test recently and she had ranges given to her like that at the end. She said that the actual scores would be sent in november.

Well, the new stuff was supposed to start August 1st, so... maybe they are working on creating a conversion from the old score to the new score? I mean, if it was like, "Hey, you made a 157," I would be like... okay...? They would need to say that a 157 is about like making a 620 (or whatever) for it to make any sense.

Either way, no one who took the old test ever got a range, so it must be a new thing. And we have no idea how it works.

I never took the "old" GRE only the one I took today. I didn't realize that part was also different from the old test. I didn't know you got your score immediately with the old test. Oh well I will wait it out. I will say I am calling the GRE people because one of my questions did not have answer choices attached to it. My assumption is that they are going through the tests to work through any glitches before releasing scores, either way assuming will get me in trouble and I am going to call... one question can raise my score!

Hmm...that's weird. My score at the end of the old GRE was exactly the same as the score mailed home to me two weeks after the test. I guess the score for the new GRE is still getting tweaked.

I took the new exam recently and the ranges are due to them not working out the little mishaps in the new scoring system yet. Basically, they give you a range for the verbal and quant. sections and say your score could be anywhere between these two numbers.

What I did was add the two lowest and then add the two highest to know how bad and how good I could have done.

drwildlife, I did the same thing you did regarding the adding of lowest and the adding of highest. I was mostly wondering how accurate or where other people found themselves in the range, however this is new to the "new GRE" and I didn't know that. Fingers crossed! We will see in November.

I'm bumping this thread a bit to see if anyone who has taken the "new" GRE has figured out how to report their unofficial scores on their application. The test currently gives you a range that relates to how the GRE used to be scored. The new scoring (I think the high is 170 per section) hasn't been released yet.

Is anyone attempting to put an unofficial "new" GRE score on their app? What are you doing - taking an average of your range?

I would report the range you were given, unless you can only enter one number … then I guess just the average. You can't use the "new" scores because we don't actually know what the "new" score will be … my assumption is they are trying to standardize the scores so that both Q and V have the same percentiles for the same scores … or something …

I don't really know, I am going to get my score back and be like WOOHOO I GOT 150! Wait is that good?

… I will stop rambling now. Maybe your best bet is just to contact VMCAS/the school you are applying to and ask what they want.

I asked about this when I took my GRE two weeks ago, and was told that the scores aren't standardized yet. The range is meant to give you an idea of where your score might sit based on how the test was previously scored (hence the range). Since no one knows what the scores are going to be until November, I wouldn't put any number until you contact the school directly. Most schools, from what I've heard, are accepting both the new and old versions, but its best to check before you write something that ends up being false - doesn't make a good impression.

For those of us who have taken the revised GRE, is there any way to assess whether our scores (in the ranges given) are closer to the higher or lower end of the ranges? For example, if my range on a particular section was 520 - 620, is my score likely to be closer to 520, closer to 620, or somewhere in the middle... ?

Unfortunately, no. That's why they gave the range. They haven't finished standardizing yet, which means even they don't know. Kinda of strange, but those of us who are taking it during Aug and Sept are kind of like the guinea pigs. They are going to review our scores, standardize them, and build the scale from there. On the plus side, this can sometimes mean you would get a higher score. Its not always true, but if they feel some questions were too difficult, they adjust the score accordingly. :luck:

For those who are curious ...

I was given a score of 540-640 on verbal and ended up with a 162 which was 90th percentile. The range they gave me corresponded to about 75-93 % so I ended up nearer to the top of that range.
And a score of 750-800 on quant and anded up with a 162 again, which is 87th percentile there). 82-94 corresponds approximately to the range they gave me.

I don't know if other people found they scored "higher" in the range of verbal and lower in it on quant, but that's what I had.

I'm assuming now they will just resume giving you scores at the end of the test - but out of 170. =)

My verbal was at the higher end of the range and my quant ended up being in the middle of the range they gave. Overall, happy with my scores 🙂

My verbal score was actually out of the range on the low end that they gave me at the end of the test. Still happy with the score, somewhere in the low 90's percentile, but I thought that was really strange. Has that happened to anyone else where your final score was not in the range they provided?

I was given a range of 750-800 for verbal and 740-800 for quantitative. The scores I ended up with were 167 verbal (98th percentile) and 159 quantitative (82nd percentile), which roughly correspond to a 720 and a 750 respectively. So the estimates were not spot-on, but close.
