Hi all,

I just found out I will be moved to Great Lakes. Has anyone on this board been stationed there? I've got a family and we're interested in places to live. It seems like Grayslake, Gurnee, and Libertyville may be good locations. But I heard to avoid Waukegan. Lake Bluff and Lake Forest are nice, but probably way above my BAH!

Thanks for all the input.

I live in Lake Bluff (Chicago Med School is about 4.5 feet from Great Lakes) and can tell you there are some nice places around. You are right to stay away from Waukegan. The Base housing is pretty nice. There are also a string of really nice apartments on Waukegan Rd (still in Lake Bluff) if you are interested in apartments. This is actually where I live, and I def recommend my apartment complex.
Lake Forest isn't really an option on BAH.
Libertyville has some nice places, but it would be about 30 minutes or more (depending on train crossings) every morning rather than 5 from Lake Bluff.
PM me if you have any questions

Thanks for the info. I think Lake Bluff is probably going to be out of our price range. We're looking to rent a house as we've got a growing family. I think for our needs/wants to meet our price limitation, we'll probably end up looking out in Gurnee or Grayslake.

If you have a chance, drive to Lake Forest and eat at Lovell's. It's owned and run by CAPT (ret) Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13. His son is the executive chef. Wear your Navy uniform and CAPT Lovell will sit and chat with you as if you're his long-lost brother. Pretty impressive, considering how you're talking with someone who's gone to the moon twice (Apollos 8 and 13). If you have his book (Lost Moon) bring it and he'll autograph it.

The building is filled with Navy and NASA memorabilia. Warning: it's a little on the pricey side.

You may also want to look at Highland Park (maybe 15 min away). There are a good amount of military families (with children) around that area/Fort Sheridan

I looked into the Ft. Sheridan housing. It seems nice with its location on the water. Unfortunately, they don't have basements. I know it sounds ridiculous to say that a 4BR house without a basement is going to be too small, but I guess if we're willing to pay for it, we can probably find a place with lots of space.

I just got my house hunting TAD set up. Looking forward to the visit to the area.

Trinity - thanks for the cafe suggestion. I once saw Capt. Lovell do a talk regarding his experiences on Apollo 13. Got a nice picture with him afterwards. I wonder if he remembers me.... 😉
