So, I saw another poster who recently had a poor shadowing experience, which is very unfortunate. I thought I would share a positive experience from today.
I contacted the APMA for a few suggestions since I am relatively new to the area and they sent me one. I emailed him last week and he emailed me back that day. He is a Fellow and board certified in Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery. He has been listed as one of the top doctors (not just podiatrists) in our area for the last several years. I was pretty nervous going in, but he immediately put me at ease.
I cannot say enough good things about him. We started off in his office discussing a little of my background and then moved into podiatry as a career. After about 10 minutes, we moved on to seeing patients. He had a full schedule for the day.
He explained why he was seeing each patient before we went in and then I got to see how he treated them. He would explain whatever he was doing as he was doing it. Afterwards, if I had any questions about the patient's condition that I did not want to ask in front of them, we would talk briefly in between patients. We went over pre- and post op xrays. He would put them side by side and explain in detail the issue, then show me on the xray how he corrected it. He would also explain how he would use one procedure on a certain patient, and perhaps a different one on another based on their medical history.
I saw a good range of patients - diabetic wound care, charcot foot, bunionectomy post ops, dislocation, ulcers, hammer toes and an achilles repair. As I was leaving, he not only offered for me to observe some surgeries, but mentioned that he would be happy to write me a LOR. 😍
He had just hired a new doc out of residency who was very pleasant and came back to talk to me. He had a lot of great insight on what podiatry school is like and we talked about the pros and cons of his alma mater.
Truly a wonderful day and definitely solidified my interest in podiatry even more. Very, very cool 😀
