There's no logic in buying a nice watch. There are tonnes out there.

I was reading up on interview advice. One guy specifically said not to wear diving watches with a suit. I have a fairly innocuous watch but I'm not about to buy another one. Could someone explain how this is tacky, and if so, how tacky? It's not this shiny in real life.
In the world of male fashion, you can do whatever you like as long as it looks good and you feel confident with it.
Traditionally, you shouldn't wear a dive watch with a suit. It should be gold or with a leather strap. And if you are on interviews or other formal events, then go with tradition, but any other time, so what you like. There are no limits on fashion...only limits to what you will wear without being embarrassed.

What kind of watches do you guys own? I was thinking about getting one of these.

This is the exact watch I have (speedmaster), but in blue. Got it in 2004, had to send it into repair 2010; cost me $400 (!) AUD.

Yeah, Omegas require the 5 year tune-up that runs a few hundred dollars. It's the watch that keeps on costing...but I like them.
This was my present to myself for finishing 9 years of school after college.
This is one hell of a nice watch!
That's not a typical dive watch. That's probably nicer than most candidates' dress watch.

The only place where a big dive watch is really out of place is in a tuxedo at some formal event. It just looks stupid, even if James Bond did it in a bunch of movies. Having said that, I see it all the time. Particularly with Rolex and Panerai. Having a $7-10k dive watch doesn't make it formal wear.
Future classy folks take note.

(re)Learning all these weird rules always blows my mind. When the time comes, I'll probably play it safe and go without a watch, unless that's an even bigger faux pas.
For those of you who wear something daily, do you go with a cheap digital watch or take the trouble to frequently sterilize these metal watches with alcohol or soap?

I've been wearing this one pretty much every day for years. I got it as a present to myself when I got out of the Navy. I have a modest collection, but I don't usually wear anything else to work. (except on MRI day when I pick a cheap quartz)
It cleans up fine with a bit of soap and water.👍
It's a bad investment, but with a bit of preventive maintenance, it should easily last longer than me.
I actually plan to get one of these as a retirement present, or an "I've sold out to PP present". Whichever comes first.😉
