I'm looking to apply to Veterinary school in September, however I have not taken my GRE's yet. I understand that you get your Math and Vocab scores right as you finish and that your scores are mailed to you shortly after with your Analytical, (Thanks Angelo84).

However, I'm curious how long is "shortly after"? I would like to take my GRE's right before I apply so that I can study right up to the last minute.

For most of my schools, I need my app in by Oct 1st, so do you think taking my GRE's in the middle of September is safe to get my scores in by Oct 1st?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

It took about 2-3 weeks for me to get my results. But, you can send the scores on the sheet to the schools you're applying to as you take the test. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they say you have to take your GREs by October 1st (might be earlier this year because they were going to have it changed and all). I think you'll be fine if you take them in Mid-September.

Thank you for such a quick reply!

Yes, you are right, that was my mistake. I meant to say I need to have my GRE's in by October 1st!

Thanks again. 🙂 Good to know I still have some time for taking the GRE's.

I waited to the last mintue last year....I took them Sept. 16th. The school got them ON Oct. 1st. I JUST made it in with no time to spare, but then I saw that OK state takes them as late as Jan someting, and UF gives Oct 26th as the last date to take the test....so check with each school !! Hope this helps.

If the school says that the test has to be taken by Oct. 1st I don't think they need the scores then. Just have them sent to the schools you are applying to and as long as the adcomms see that you have taken the test by their deadline you should be fine.

The choice is obviously up to you but I would take it once early and if you don't like your score take it again at the last minute. I was sooo nervous the first time I took it my verbal score was in the toilet and my math score was only ok (430V, 680Q). The second time I went in I was soo much more relaxed because one, I knew what to expect and two, I already had scores even if they weren't great so I couldn't do any worse than that. Like I said, it's up to you, but from my experience I would suggest taking it early (and remember you can only take it once a month).

Wow, that site helps out a lot! Thank you very much.

I really debated whether I wanted to take the GRE's twice, or just wait til the last minute to take them and study the entire time. When it came down to it, I simply can't afford to take the test twice as much as I would love to take it twice!

So I'm really hoping for great scores the first time around.

How much do people usually study to get a good score on the GRE? I work full time, so I do what I can after work and on the weekends. Two weeks before the test I'm taking off of work to just cram study. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the great responses! I appreciate it.

Start learning vocab now. it's a lot easier if you do that a little at a time and keep going over it, imo. I studied for about 2 weeks before my test.

i do not recommend doing what i did, but i will pass along my experiences anyways 🙂

I did not start to do anything towards the application process until, oh I would say the middle of august.... that is when I signed up for the GRE in september (i think it was the middle of sept), starting thinking about who I would ask for my LORs, kind of looked over the personal statement requirements, and purchased some GRE study guides...

in sept I took the gre for the first time... verbal was pretty good and analytical was good... but the math was horrible (especially since I have a Masters in engineering!!) so I knew I had to take them again... well you can only take them one time per calendar month, and I happened to luck out that the VMCAS was due Oct 2 and all the schools I applied to had a later date to accept the scores, so there I was, on Sunday Oct 1st, taking the gre for the second time...

so I was able to add in my test scores of test #2 to the application that night (though not the analytical scores) and submit the application that night... again... i do NOT recommend waiitng until the night before to hit send... though I had no problems with web traffic or anything like that...

the schools all received my scores within their own deadlines, so everything turned out OK... but it was beyond stressful!! If you can, take the test in August (31st if possible)... and that way, just in case you happen to mess up like I did and run out of time on the math section and guess randomly on the last 8 questions, you have the comfort of knowing that you can take the exam again in september and still have plenty of time to meet all the deadlines!!!

good luck 🙂

Hey there, Hopeful. I just took the GRE last Sat., & I'm not thrilled with my score. I'm debating whether I should bother re-taking it next month...
Anyhooo, my tip (one that I paid no heed to myself) would be: practice the computer version--use that CD the ETS sends you after you sign up to take the GRE, or find some other test prep site that offers you a simulated computer test--it's very different from just studying with paper test questions, which is what I did (I swear, staring at the computer screen automatically sucks neurons out through your eyes!). Good luck!
:luck:

So funny, sad, true...

I would say don't worry too much about your GRE scores- mine sucked pretty bad- but I know you won't listen. I took the test twice- both times the stress sent me into migrainetown, and since triptans don't work for me, I was on opioids for the test. Not so good, level 3 narcotics, for the whole paying attention thing. Not to mention the slowed down connections!

My verbal was a 6.0 though- both times- go figure! I can make an argument, but I can't read figures (think the Quantitative was in the 540 range).👍

Good luck to you in your apps. Sure hope you have more done on that VMCAS than I did (both times) by now. Second time around, my LOR writer left for vacation without sending it in- wasn't due back until after Oct. 1st. His secretary and I cracked his password, searched his files, and sent it in. 2 days early. Whew- that was close!
