Hi all,

I didn't get into med school the first time around....my MCAT was pretty low (a 26) and I took it twice and got the same score. I am hesitant to take it again considering I got the same score the second time (I was REALLY disappointed). However, I was wondering if any of you thought a good GRE score would supplement a not so good MCAT score. I had a 3.4 overall GPA and 3.0 Science GPA. I did a lot of extracurricular activities and am taking some time off before medical school.

Any advice about if the GREs will help with medical school admission?

Thanks!

The GRE is irrelevant to med school applications. Apply DO, and you'll have a better shot. They are more MCAT forgiving. Or, take time to aggressively pursue getting at least a 2-3 pt. increase.

How did you study

i took the kaplan class. i was getting 30s on my practice tests, and then got a 26 the second time...so i am hesitant to take it again.

i heard that with DO, your chances for a good residency are limited.

Not true. Look around and do some research. There is plenty of info out there.

GRE will be about as useful to you as a super-high ACT score. No one cares.

You really should try to raise that MCAT a few points; it will make the process more of a breeze than a struggle.

I know that retaking is the furthest thing from enjoyable, but ask yourself if you're willing to make a sacrifice now for something you've always dreamed of doing. Almost every premed would do anything they had to to get in, because being able to study medicine in a country that has the best-trained physicians in the world is an opportunity that really very few are able to have. Take advantage of it and don't let anything(especially yourself) get in the way of that.

Don't you think that's a bit over zealous?

Not really. I know of a few US physcians (or scientists) that have studied overseas. By contrast, I have met dozens of foreign docs coming here to do research because it will help their careers back home.

To the OP, easiest thing to do to strengthen your app is to redo the MCAT. Last few times, whatever you did, weren't enough. Throw out your old method of studying and find an new approach.

I know someone who did put in their GRE scores. She took them before the MCATs. They were impressive. Her MCAT scores were average. She mentioned her score during her interviews. Don't know how much it helped, but she's going to Drexel this fall.
