Can you get in-state tuition by joining a specific state's guard or reserves? Florida in particular seems really strict on changing residency, so I was wondering if this would be an exception?

National guard in most states will begin granting you in state tuition, however the obligations of the military will distract from your overall medical education and the 4 year likelihood of getting deployed in our current state is high enough that the extra year of school you will have to take after deployment will cancel out the lost year of attending salary.

If you are a veteran or recently discharged some states have legislation that automatically qualifies you for in-state residency. If you plan on using your GI bill or a GI bill from a parent you may also qualify for in-state tuition in some states (especially at public schools). If your worried about tuition costs and also interested in serving why not explore one of the HPSP programs? As stated above, I wouldn't bother with military obligations of reserves or guard components while you're in medical school, because those obligations will come before your education.
