Got this today asking about waitlist movement.

"We do not anticipate movement until after May 15th. In prior years we have had good movement on the alternate list. "

Thanks IndigoBoy  You are awesome! I hope this works out for as many of us as possible :) It would be great to be classmates with you guys!

You can send an update to the admissions email address: [email protected]

I think I am going to go on SDN hibernation (unless the office tells me something new). I spent all day thinking about this yesterday. I had to wash my brain out with Chuck Palahniuk. :D

Good luck everyone:luck: Don't stress and try not to think too much about it (reading disgusting books helps).

Haha, I spent all day yesterday thinking about this too! My brainwashing book of choice was Harry Potter though. Also just read the Elegance of the Hedgehog - highly recommend that one to distract anyone who is going crazy waiting to hear from schools.

Thanks for posting helpful advice and info everyone! I REALLY hope we all get good news soon. I'm trying not to check SDN too much either, but it is nicer when there are people with whom you can commiserate. :)

Well I just shelled out $1000 for my deposit at Ponce. I figured I wouldn't know abut GW by May 17the absolute last day Ponce said I could give my deposit. Fingers crossed....... In retrospect $1000 is nothing compared to GW tuition (I looked at again and fainted but yes I'd absolutely still go there). :xf:

Ok, this post means I am an epic epic sdn fail.

So maybe I won't completely stop posting hahaha...I'll just do my best not to be on whenever I have free time :) I definitely appreciate all the helpful advice from everyone, and how positive everyone's being. That's all we can do right now!

Indigo, definitely worth it. I'm sure they can refund the deposit, right? Yeah, that GWU deposit is nuts! Oh well, at least it's a chunk of the tuition! Not a huge chunk, but whatever. The way I see it, we're gonna be 150k+ in debt, at the end of it, what's $1000 here and there . Worth it!

So I'm a SDN failure too. Maybe in my own twisted way posting in this thread will bring me good karma ;). Unfortunately the 1k is non-refundable (of course). How much is the deposit for GW you mention??

Well... I know $100 is due from accepted students by May 15th. Then after that, there is a tuition prepayment of $3000 due by June 15th (I believe, but I'm not sure how it works if one is accepted after that). Blergh, but maybe all schools do that? Hmm.

...Please, feel free to correct me if you know otherwise, as I may be completely wrong...

Do you all think that candidates will start to be pulled from the alternate list on Monday 5/17?

Or do you think that it may take a few days after that?

I was thinking that they probably already have their top few candidates in mind so on 5/17 they will begin the notification process for the lucky few.

How does GW contact students they are offering a position to off of the alternate list? By phone or via email?

I remember last year it started like a day before the 15th (via phone) so i dont think it would be much later than monday, if not as early as this friday.

Good luck to everyone!

I second that, Sunday night will be the absolute worst...

Hope there is something good on TV as I won't be able to sleep for sure...

So I called GW today and they said, they'll wait till the 15th to see what the class actually looks like...and on Monday (17th), they will START to review alternate list files for acceptances....meaning if will still take a WHILE to hear back after the 17th? This better NOT be true!

hey everyone

i just called GW. they said that exactly what happens on May 15th is that they actually begin re-reviewing all of our files again and that we should be hearing Late May/ Early June

She said that MOST LIKELY we will not hear until the week after we have been anticipating (so probably will hear 5/24-5/28)

the wait is killing me! hang in there guys!

You should turn in the AMCAS as soon as it opens, with like...one school for it to be sent to...that way, you only spend the initial fee, ($100 something, right?). And then, if for some reason things don't work out (which I really hope they do work out for you :luck:, because, from my experience, reapplying is such a pain, and I hate to see others deal with it), your AMCAS is verified super early, and you can always add schools, and you'll be so ahead of the game!

But still, I hope you hear from them before it comes to this (June 2nd-ish, right?) . Honestly, I hope we all do! I think I wasted all my stress and anticipation on this past week, so hopefully this coming week will be smooth sailing...:xf: Good luck everyone!

do they generally send emails if you miss the call? And does the caller ID say unknown number or the name of the school?

Hi guys...I called today and they told me that they would leave a voicemail if they missed you and as long as you're able to get back to them that day or the next it will be fine. Forgot to ask whether they would send a follow-up email. Hope this helps! And good luck to all of us getting that call!!! I'm crossing all available appendages. :)

For the people who received a call yesterday, did you receive them during normal "business" hours of very early in the morning (i.e. 7am)?

Wow.. This week is terrible.

Congrats to cgull!

Does anyone know how many people are on the alternate list? and how many do they end up accepting?

My heart is in my mouth. Have mercy.

Anyone else think this sucks?? I'm so confused why this year they're being different and not having the first large round notified on the 15th... (except the one SDN acceptance).....This week sucks big time. I basically stare at my phone all day at work.

Wow.. This week is terrible.

Congrats to cgull!

I just got off the phone from someone in the admission committee.. and they stated that the class is currently full. They will only review files as slots become available. :(

It seems they have been telling people a lot of different things. First, the wait list would move on May 15. Then, people wouldn't hear for one to two weeks past the deadline. Now, that the class is full. I don't know what to think.

wait how can the class possibly be full? i thought they would at least accept 10-15 of us off the waitlist? was there NO movement this cycle or something??

it seemed like last year there were several people accepted immediately on May 15th?

Every cycle is different.. and if they accept around 350 for 175 spots.. then it is easy to see why it'd be full. I just hope some attain a spot at a school elsewhere to open up a spot for some of us.

do we have a rough estimation of how many people generally get accepted off GW's waitlist?

i know there is no definite, exact answer...i want just like a ball park guess.

im praying for all of us guys! hope you guys are doing the same!! (or at least keeping your fingers crossed for those of you dont normally pray haha)

stay optimistic!! we will be fine =]

OMG What the ****************

That is absolutely nonsense. How can they give us such an optimistic alternate list letter "Congratulations!" and now this?

Did anyone else call? I simply am too scared to call. :scared:

Even if seats do open up, it's not going to be anything more than 3 or 4.

Lord have mercy.

I always thought it was 350 people accepted overall. Meaning, they accept 180 or so at first, and put the rest to alternate list. Then after May 15, they accept a lot more people.

Who exactly did you talk to?

Maybe they are still waiting to see what spots have opened up after May 15...?

Didn't someone say we could hear anywhere from May to early June?

It's full. I called. :(

They also said they did contact people earlier this week. But only one of which was on SDN? I think?

They still say that they "expect" movement. People drop out or some have dual acceptances. They said they can call us anywhere between now and up to the orientation week in August. They do not email you. They only call you. If you are leaving the country or something, you should inform them and tell them to email you instead.

Not sure how much movement can happen for there to be room for even just half of us. When you think about there being at least a hundred or so people on the alternate list, you find it really difficult to be optimistic.

I am very gutted about this. I've been hopeful for more than a year now and it's just such a crushing pain to face the truth. I'm sure a lot of people feel this way.

I have no idea what's next. Do I reapply and retake my MCAT? go foreign/caribbean? or do nothing.

Ah .. what can you do.. such is life.

I wrote to the admissions office today and here is what they said, "The admissions committee will review files as necessary to keep the class full." I'm not sure this means that the class is full already because that would mean that there was VERY little movement on the waitlist after May 15th, when usually there is more (based on past years' threads).

I'm not sure what to think, but I'm praying for all of us!

I hope you aren't going too crazy with the waiting. I just talked to GW admissions, and although the class is full, they definitely expect to have more waitlist movement. Good luck everyone!

No, I don't think so. That would mean almost every single applicant that was accepted into the program also accepted a position in the class. A huge portion of the applicants end up choosing a different program which is why there is a large first-round acceptance. Otherwise, a lot more than a few of us would get in from the waitlist.

Based on the fact that they interview 1,000 or so and only accept 300 I think there are far more then 100 of us on the list and it sounds like it will only move one by one since its full :(

If you are Spanish speaking have you looked into Puerto Rico schools? They are all LCME accredited and consdiered US schools (you are NOT a FMG, there are matches into every specialty). You need 6 credits of Spanish to apply. I will be attending Ponce School of Medicine (if my friends at GW don't come through ASAP..). Their MCAT average is much lower than mainland schools due to the fact that English is a second language for most, and they like mainlanders who have a true desire and passion for medicine.

Yes this is a crushing pain from GW especially when the alternate stuff is so congratulatory and I've submitted updates, letters, shown interest, etc..........even more so since I live about 10 minutes away and always go past the medical center......

It's full. I called. :(

I'm wondering if they have already processed everyone that dropped on May 15th and pulled people off of the waitlist earlier this week based on the number of spots that opened up or if the "full" status is based off of people who dropped prior to May 15th.

I had to read your statement twice to understand what you were saying. But damnit, I sincerely hope that it is the latter.

I am somewhat surprised by the very little movement so far but like I told ya guys earlier, this is the second time I am waitlisted at GW and now I know better than to get my hopes up too high by that overly optomistic Alternate List letter they send us all. If this is your only WL and you have no other acceptances do not hesitate to submit AMCAS again when it comes out. You might even get invited by GW for next year while you are still an alternate for this one (believe me, it's possible). Anyways, I loved GW and would love to go if I was accepted but I'm sure there are a few hundred of us that feel the same way!

I like the 30 Rock reference!

This process is so hard!! I am feeling frustrated and confused, but still holding onto what little hope is left. I wish there was more transparency in this process. So many very qualified people (as I'm sure you all are) get turned down. It's unlike any other professional school application process.

Thinking about AMCAS is filling me with dread. I'm sending out positive thoughts to you all...

This is my second year applying and my second go around with alternate lists. If I don't get in this year my MCATs expire so I can't reapply for a while and it looks like I may have to choose a different life path. I have been working with doctors for 2 years in clinical research and they, along with everyone who knows me, are shocked that I can't get in. I am on 3 wait lists and on hold at one school. This really is the craziest process ever. I have done everything I can at this point, sent letters/ phone calls/ etc. All we can do is wait. It is heartbreakingly frustrating.

If this is only your first round, reapply ASAP, - I got 4x as many interviews this year as last year, my problem was the timing - one of my rec letters got held up and didn't go in until September. The one thing out of my control...GRR.

Good luck everyone, I hope something works out for all of us.

moonflower - I completely understand where you are coming from. It is a difficult and unpredictable process that is not always fair. But try not to give up, I am in the same boat as you and can relate. When I think of pursuing something different though I just feel even more unhappy. 3 waitlists is promising - be confident :) Best of luck.

If this is only your first round, reapply ASAP, - I got 4x as many interviews this year as last year, my problem was the timing - one of my rec letters got held up and didn't go in until September. The one thing out of my control...GRR.

Good luck everyone, I hope something works out for all of us.
