Hey guys, long-time lurker here😳... I am a second year resident and am thinking about Gyn for fellowship...I was just wondering if you all had some opinions on good gyn fellowships on the East Coast (or elsewhere). Obviously I am using other sources as well but thought maybe the posters here would have some good insights.

I would also appreciate input on what you think of Gyn fellowships in general, i.e. what are the advantages/disadvantages to other surg path fellowships like GI, breast, soft tissue, etc.

Thanks!

I would say Hopkins (Kurman) is the best. BWH is probably also up there. There are others that are good but those are the two most famous.

Gyn path fellowships are not as popular these days, not sure why since the volume is fairly high. I am starting to see some ads for private labs looking for people with Gynpath fellowships, but it's still less than almost all others except perhaps soft tissue and pulmonary.

The question is why you want to do a gyn path fellowship. If your eyes are set on an academic career, then fine. But if you want to go private practice, your best bet might be a general surg path fellowship, and you can use all your elective time on Gyn and get almost as good of an experience. Of course, I'm still trying to figure out why GI path fellowships are popular in private practice. You don't need a GI path fellowships to sign out the vast majority of GI.

Soslow at MSKCC is a great teacher and, of course, they see a lot of great consult material.

Hey guys - thanks for your input. My ultimate goal is to work in public health as an AP pathologist (I know, unusual and kind of strange) but in the immediate future need to get a relatively well paying job in the private sector in order to pay off humongous med school loans. So I am having a hard time choosing fellowships that will help me accomplish both the short term and long range goals. Considering surg path, gyn, cytology, GI, hemepath.

Hopkins. They have a junior guy there that I know is literally of legend. SO'd what I think the US record for cases in 24 and 48 hr period while at the AFIP.

Can stay awake for several days at a time etc SO'ing almost nonstop doing some crazy macrobiotic diet. Almost has magical powers. A mere couple years after fellowship he was co-speaking with Kurman and Kempson as well as other big whigs.

we talkin' about Russ Vang?

you met him? Dont think you did since he was only at SUMC for 1 year way back when...

nope, didn't. did hear his name mentioned during s/o with Hendrickson and Kempson. I assume he was just here for the SP fellowship??

I would put Russ up there with Larry Weiss, Bostwick and Colby as **the** Stanford surg path grandmasters. Cant think of anymore off hand..

Actually Russ, Tom Colby and Larry Weiss could easily sign out all of the Stanford Med Center as a trio and never send a single case out in consultation.
