Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am wondering:

1. How difficult would it be to get into a psychiatry residency that can sponsor an H1b visa as a Canadian DO applicant? And will it get much worse in 4 years?
2. Assuming I get the J1, come back to Canada for 2 years, how difficult would it be to get H1b at somewhere like LA or a decent place in Cali?

Thanks

One thing you have to keep in mind is that in Canada the psychiatry residency is 5 years (vs 4 years in the US), so if you're forced to return to Canada after psychiatry residency on a J-1, you'd have to do a fellowship in the US to make your residency a total of at least 5 years before you can get Royal College certified and work as a psychiatrist. In short, you really really want an H1B.

I can't speak for now but 4 years ago there were still quite a few programs willing to sponsor H1B. The immigration picture changed a lot since Trump and even more so this year after a new interim director for USCIS was appointed. My guess is that it's harder to obtain H1B/green cards across the board and probably fewer programs are willing to take the chance.

It's impossible to predict what's happening in 4 years. Depends on who's in power during that time.

This is a difficult question. The only way to know is to be involved in the search yourself. Most of these jobs willing to sponsor H1B/green cards are either in an academic setting or jobs that have been difficult to fill (i.e rural, busy..etc).

Sorry couldn't help more. I assume you haven't applied yet. There's really not much you can do except apply and hope for the best.

I was a South Korean, DO, who did my psychiatry PGY1 as a F1 OPT in 2009, so yes. To me, strike 1 for being a non US citizen, no US green card. Strike 2 for being a DO. But I think I ended up hitting a homerun.
