We're working on our first set of wax trial dentures, and I'm so frustrated with bilateral balanced occlusion that I'm about ready to start destroying things. I'm rapidly approaching the point of building my entire career plans around the central pillar of never touching another removable pros case the rest of my life. Complete dentures, from the depths of hell I stab at thee.

that doesn't sound fun in the slightest...I apologize...
how difficult is it? I'm not even in dental school, so I wouldn't mind if you vent! 😉

I feel for you. I'm a 1st year and having trouble waxing up #10. I can't imagine having to do the whole mouth.

I am too. I can't wait to wax up the molars. Hang in there Bill.

 LOL Waxing dentures doesn't involve waxing up every tooth. That would be heinous. Waxing a denture means setting plastic denture teeth in wax with the appropriate occlusion and forming the wax to resemble natural gingiva. It is pretty involved, but I am one of those weird people who kind of like it. It's actually sort of relaxing. Melt, set, check occlusion TAP TAP TAP - melt, adjust, check occlusion TAP TAP TAP - repeat. 🙂

BY FAR the worst thing I have done in dental school is setting denture teeth. One of the most boring and time consuming things I have ever done. My plans to go into pedo make me pretty happy I will not have to set any denture teeth during my professional career.

here, here.. i too share the pain of waxing. our first full contour practicle is friday (#8). i am so not looking forward to moving on to posterior 🙁

I completely agree. Denture lab work is no fun. Unfortunately, we have to do most of the lab work including setting teeth for all of our patients. Blah.

I'll admit I too was freaking out when I was doing the teeth setting back in my school days. Look at it this way,it's just something you have to do for now, it will help you gain a better perspective of what goes into making dentures and the best part is once you graduate, you wont be doing it at all, making dentures in clinical practice is fun, profitable and sometimes challenging but you won't be setting your teeth ...just your fees 😀

Hang in there, remember after you graduate, the lab does all the work. At a grand a piece, you will enjoy dentures unless you come across an "EXACTING" patient.

Ha! Wait until you have to make provisionals for fixed pros. I can't get decent margins with ANY of the materials that we're using. It takes me 1 hour to prep a tooth and 4 hours to make a provisional! Ugh.

Just out of curiosity, what materials are you using?

I was the class lab-***** who did most of the people's clinical lab work for them. Made a fortune, but I'm glad it's over.

We use methyl methacrylate for provisionals as well. It's hard to get really awesome margins but it's pretty easy to get decent margins with a little beading after you've trimmed it to the right contours. Is there a better material out there?

My biggest frustration is how easily the ION provisionals we use get dinged up. You barely touch them with any thing besides your fingers and you gouge it. Makes me crazy.

Methyl methacrylate (Jet) or ethyl methacrylate (Trim something or other).

Truly a big pain in the rear.

That sucks, do they let you use Integrity by Dentsply later? With that you can "fix" bad margins pretty easily by using more of the material or flowable composite. If it's available, it might make your life a little easier. I liked it anyways.

I'll second that - Integrity blows away methyl methacrylates.

curious,
how much did u charge?

i've heard of folks having dentlab techs to do their wax-ups..

hmmm..
...what would be a "fair" donation?

For gold crowns it was $40 per unit...they handed me an impression and I handed them a crown within a day or two. Never had a problem with them fitting, I guess they always gave me good impressions. They say all crowns fit...just some better than others.

One of the other guys did removable, I only did fixed.

Some of our in-house lab guys ran the same deal on the side. I guess they could have gotten in trouble if found out. I know of some classmates who had outside labs do their work also. They had to pay more, and one classmate got busted because the gold crown was made of different gold than the school uses and looked a different color.

Nice. I'm in the habit of reseating some of my work anyways, and fixing those margins has turned out to be a must on quite a bit of the work.

I honestly think my product would look better if the materials were of better quality. I also feel as though I don't have all the tools I need to be succesful, so I'm ordering some stuff as we speak.

As with all great things in life, it will cost you.

One refill tube minus the gun will cost around 150$, with the correct gun to use to dispense it will run about 240 bucks. Now I know why our professors bitch at us about not wasting it.

I bought a tube for $70 last year. And after 30 temps, I still had about 1/2 the tube.

I'm sure it can be found cheaper that was after a 2 min internet search.
