Ok, so I'm about to start med school. I'm moving out...first time I'll be on my own...even though my parents would be like an hour away.
I absolutely loooooove to cook! But I'm thinking that once I start school...my time will be limited and I would probably be tired when it comes to preparing meals.

I just wanted to get an idea..just for the heck of it! of how many of you med students out there cook your own meals on a regular basis or just eat from the cafeteria or eat out and stuff.. Are there any recipes you would recommend? 😉

Thanks a lot!
Karina

I end up eating lunch out pretty often because I never get up early enough to make a lunch to take to school with me. I do, however, cook dinner quite often. I cook something just about very night, be it macaroni and cheese, or a hot dog, insert quick/easy/frozen dinner here. I also try to cook a real meal about once or twice a week. It's kind of how I unwind after a long day of classes and before i start studying for the night. Contrary to popular belief, you do have some free time in med school. If you don't try and take a little time for yourself in your busy schedule, you'll go nuts.

note to self: must befriend the cooker types. otherwise starve.

i can cover drinks, and grill stuff.

Note to self: beware of those free-loaders....j/k

Frozen food and quick fixin meals would be better than eating out all the time. We can't look like bean-bag chairs after the 1st year

If you were going to NSU I will probably cook for you! I loooove having people around and eating. And since I'll be living by myself...I would probably just lure people into my house by offering food! My best friend got me what she thinks I need for my new apartment...a set of pots and pans and plates! People just see me as a cook! 🙁

I cooked a lot my first year at COMP, and second too for that matter..its how I relax. So I had people over for burgers and stuff several times....if its important to you you'll make time for it...that goes for anything during medical school.

I know I'm definitely in the minority in my class, but I cooked for my husband and I nearly every night of the school year, and rarely went out to lunch or dinner except for the weekends. This is mostly because I too love to cook, and it was a way to maintain balance and remind my self of the simple pleasures when times were particularly tough (especially during exam times).

My key to success was that I collected a bunch of 20-30 min (prep-time) recipes over the summer before 1st year so that I always had quick ideas available and the ingredients on hand. Of course we ate our fair share of frozen pizzas too, but it helped me hit the books more enthusiastically when I could count on the break for cooking/eating/time with my husband every night.

That is exactly what I'm doing now! I'm just collecting a bunch of recipes and trying them out with my family...they're loving it! So then school starts and I have recipes to chose from and it won't be the first time I make them...

Check out "30 minute meals" on foodnetwork, good stuff.

how "in shape" are the ave ms1 's ?? toned?? flabby?? i question this because im busting my butt right now to get some "tone-age" on me so im not so flabby during omm... i dont mind my shirt being off, but question how others will feel about MY shirt being off

i tried to cook every night, and ate at my friends and they did the same. You work out a routine, and the same goes for finding time for the gym. Your job is to pass medical school, and not to be a world class olympic athelete. basically that is your job. Your job is to study, except you dont get payed for it, you pay THEM for it 🙂

i actually lost weight during med school (muscle) because i was very nervous all the time, just ask my class mates

I cooked alot during school. Though when finals come around I ate out a lot more.

I thought I was the only one with this concern! I am naturally thin...too thin I would say, mostly on my upper body. I'm latina, so I have some meat in my hips and butt...but I don't like the way my arms look skinny. So I've really gotten serious about lifting weights and doing the high protein thing to gain a bit more body mass so I can look decent in a sports bra during OMM. 😛

People here seem to cook often. On average...how much do you spend a week or per month for groceries? 😛

I'm not buff, but pretty tone in the arms( u should feel my deltoids)...my problem area is the stomach, I can't get it to flatten the way I wanted it. Over all, I'm trying to eat healthy cuz I can't eat a horse and stay skinny like before. I liked frozen entrees because it allows me to calculate my caloric intakes. After eating frozen foods and fruits for a while, I don't crave for the usual fatty food and able to control the appetite. I hope I didn't sound too prissy, I just try to be in good shape so I can attract myself a handsome med studend(j/k ...hahahaha....)

I don't cook-that's what a husband is for right??
