Ok, someone posted about a picture and I've got a question I've been debating for a while.

I'm 35, born with dark brown hair; but it is now clearly salt-n-pepper and has been since I was in my 20's. Not going to do anything about my hair, but I have a question about my beard.

I have worn a goatee for 12 years (I worked in Sr. management for a multi-national corporation so I keep it trimmed neatly). However, my beard is 70% white, and the mustache is probably 50%.

So do I:

1) Keep it and leave it as-is
2) Shave it off
3) Dye it

I'm not inclined to dye it as it would never match my hair then so that leaves 1 or 2. Any thoughts, or am I just over analyzing?

Yes, you are overanalyzing, but when it comes to med admissions, that's not necessarily a bad thing 🙂

If I were you, I'd shave it. Clearly you won't fool anybody in to thinking you are 23 years old anyway, and you don't need to. Having said that, older applicants DO face certain stigmas in the admissions process, so a graying beard, which I personally think is distinguishing, probably wont give you a leg up, and might possibly predispose an interviewer to treat you differently (not in a good way). That's my 2 cents.

I grew a beard to look older. I figure since I am older, I might as well emphasize it it a bit.

If it looks professional, keep it the way it js. Don't dye it.

I am thinking age is one of the stats they will see on a your application. So they will know your real age. And in my mind I can't see anybody going... "gee what a great candidate, but that goatee is a bit of a sticking point." Perhaps they may act on that but not say it. I say keep it because...

1) I have Van **** type beard and intend to keep it.
2) You can't do anything about people's bias. Sometimes they are not even aware of the it themselves.

If you like it, I vote keep it.

DO NOT dye it! If it comes out the wrong color, and it will, you will look like you are trying to hide your age. You can use your age and experiance to your advantage, no need to hide it.

I am a facial hair guy (full beard) but I keep it short and trimmed around the edges. I have had a beard for the last 7 years and I don't like how I look with out it.

I figure being happy with how I look will project more confidence than freshly shaved face with a piece of toilet paper on my chin.

Unite brothers. We can break this dark and unholy trifecta of metrosexualism, male-femininity, and hairlessness.

I'm furry mf'er. Fully, luxuriously, coated, in soft brown fur. Beard, gray. Hair graying.

Do not cave. Do not cringe. At the enchroachment of the smooth and pre-pubescent hordes. With their feminizing aesthetic. Making you feel like a 70's drop out.

And if I hear someone else putter the pusilanimous words "....as long as it looks professional." I'm gonna choke a mf'er.

Either shave it if you feel like it makes you look too old, or else leave it alone if you like it. Interviewers aren't going to care if your beard is black, white, or some of each. But definitely don't dye it unless you're going to dye your hair too so that it all looks the same (and then preferably have it done by a professional!). Short of sporting a comb-over, a bad dye job is probably the worst thing a guy can do to himself when it comes to "fixing" his appearance. 😛

Well a nice goatee can look distinguished. Of course, if its scraggly, no well combed its nice.

So, since you can't reach me, B. I'd just say it has to look, you now, professional.

.

In my head. I meant. I'm not at all violent without threat of harm to my people.

But metaphorically and imaginatively. I am choking out some precocious emissary of professionalism. Inserting well placed knives through occipital formamena. Scrambling. Dropping. Pulling out and an AK with an extended clip and emptying it into the board room meeting where such things are taken seriously.

Then jumping out of the 11 floor glass window. And disappearing into the night.
