Hey guys, this might sound like a dumb question but I was thinking about this for quite some time now. Im going to shadow my cousin next week, who is a family doctor. I will be attending him in his office and the hospital. Now, my problem. I have longer hair. Should I get a trim up to look more professional, and fit in? Or, would the long hair be ok. When I say long, I mean, a little below my eye-brows. Not hippie long, but like "surfer"ish long. What do you think, trim or no trim? Thanks!

The fact that you're asking the question should tell you the answer. 😉

I had my hair an inch or two longer than yours must be, and had it hugely cut when I was doing clinical time for EMT training. The more annoying thing was having to get rid of facial hair. Afterwards I proceeded to promptly grow it back as fast as possible.

yeah, i cut my longer hair to look more professional too, but i got a beard as well and ppl were cool with that...

Is having shaggy hair really that big of a deal? Your shaggy hair would make you a more memorable applicant in a sea of conservative crewcuts. Plus, med schools are always looking for diversity 😀

Ha. I'm hoping to maintain a little character in my hair for interviews. I refuse to get a crewcut....

You don't necessarily have to go crew cut, but I would keep it short for a more professional look.

It really is a case by case basis......If it looks well kept and doesn't get in the way of stuff then it probably is fine. If it looks like you were just too lazy to get a haircut and constantly falls in your face then get a new do. You can always grow it out when you become a doc. The local urologist from my town is a big guy with an almost comedic looking pony tail....

Fot God's Sake Get A Haircut!!! Please! Get A Haircut! Save Yourself!

since you're at it, might as well ask what underwear you should sport for shadowing

Yeah, your underwear should match your shirt and pants even though no one will see it. It helps give you that extra boost of confidence when talking to patients. You'll think to yourself, "Damn, I CAN do this, even my underwear matches." Also, make sure it has some give to it, just in case you have to spring to action. Someone's life could depend on it!

I agree, mke yourself look professional if you want to become a professional.

why not dye it blue
that will make you stand out from the crowed

I think I'll save the blue hair for clinicals.

Personally, I think as long as you look well groomed, nothing is wrong with it. I think a lot of people here are putting their beliefs of what a "professional" should look like off on you. It actually makes me think, what exactly should a professional look like? Don't listen to them unless you really want to. Do whatever makes you feel best.

get a haircut! you damn kids and your punk music and your danceries! *shakes fist in anger*

Lol Should I start the fashion tips 101 for premeds thread? 😉

This is funny because I truly did have a particular pair of extra-cute interview underwear, which were the same color pink as my shirt and the pinstripes of my suit. Knowing they were under there gave me the very boost you describe 😉 😳

Yes, you should trim your hair. Your cousin will be impressed by your professionalism. 🙂

I've wondered about this sort of thing as well, since I have a goatee and sideburns, both well-trimmed. In my shadowing and clinical volunteering, I've made it a point to pay attention to how everyone else looks. All the younger docs are always clean-shaven with conservative haircuts. I notice some older docs with beards (college professors seem to go this route too), but still short haircuts. I'm a fan of short hair myself, but if I've never gotten a date without the goatee. I've thought of shaving it off for Med School Interviews, but will probably keep it, since no one has seemed to have a problem with it. Anyone else have facial hair they plan to keep for Interviews?

I'm with you, I'll be keeping my goatee for interviews. I think the key is to just keep it well maintained as you said you do.

tattoo your face

I actually have a tatoo of a full butterfly spanning both buttcheeks. That way, when I flex, it looks like it's flying. 😛
