ok y'all...just to throw a wrench into things...I got my pre-interview reject from harvard two days ago and still got that email today and twice. So it's not just being sent to ppl that interviewed.

Why am I even on this thread? oh well!

In case, for some reason, someone hasn't checked their email...

Dear Harvard Medical School Applicant:

The process of mailing the decision letters for the Harvard Medical School has begun and will be complete on March 19th, 2007. Our policy forbids giving out admission decisions by phone, email or fax.

This year, we experienced an unexpected jump in the number of applications to our programs. With so many truly impressive candidates, the Committee faced an especially difficult task in selecting this year’s class. I would like to thank each of you for your interest in Harvard, and your patience throughout the application process.

If you have not received your decision letter by March 29th, please email the Admissions Office at [email protected]. Letters are sent to the address you have listed in the “preferred” contact information as posted in the AMCAS database.

Best wishes,

Joanne M. McEvoy
Director of Admissions
Harvard Medical School

ohoh! i did not get the email either 🙁(((( what does that mean??? poooo i hate this waiting game. i live in boston and as soon as i get anything in mail, i willl let you all know. but for now, no email no mail nothing 🙁

No e-mail either. I got the "good" finaid message. But I applied MD-PhD, which seems to be handled somewhat differently.

Don't give him to the BoSox, they just got rid of a curse. A-rod aka Mr. May (since thats the only month he plays well) won't win a World Series until he has a on the field production based contract, none of this money up front crap.

I think he would be perfect for the BoSox. They are the team version of Mr. May. They always lead the division early and then crumble down the stretch.

i know that harvard said that it was mailing out decisions randomly...but...do you think it's possible that they mail out west coast people on monday/tuesday, and do a gradient mailing system so east coast people have mail going out on thursday/friday, so everyone will get their decisions at approximately the same time on the weekend/monday? that's the only way i can see them putting up their fin aid website all at once....ok i've really got to stop obsessing about this... 🙁

They could also mail them all out at once, but only have the system up after a certain date, when all should have gotten the mail.

i received the email twice and got the "contact fin aid office" message (wouldn't call it the "good message" yet).

there is probably no correlation between the email and your acceptance status. most databases that store emails/mailing lists are in order of the email entered into the database. if you submitted your secondary early and were in the HMS database early you probably got the email early. (just my theory).

might have seen piles of admissions letters being picked up by a postman outside of the admissions office today...... good luck everyone!

Although lets not conflate the pre-2000 yankees with the last several years. The paradigm that has always worked for the Yanks is to develop talent from within and then bring in extra players as necessary. Since around 2000, the Yanks have started taking on a team of mercenaries at the cost of prospects, and have suffered as a result.

Now with Wang, Cano et al. they seem to be moving back to the strategy that was so successful. That said, I am very curious to see the vaunted Yankees in a couple of years when the post-Mariano era begins. That man should have a shelf full of world series MVPs.

What is annoying is that, as a Red Sox fan, I used to bash the Yanks for their spending sprees, but now the Sox are becoming more and more like that. Still, the Yanks have a payroll about 80 mill more than any other team, which is crazy. What other team could afford to have busts like Pavano (maybe the sox and the cubs...).

Sorry, I love to talk baseball. Couldn't resist. In other news, I got the bad message for the financial aid login, and the difference cannot be a coincidence as far as I'm concerned, so I am now only checking this thread out of morbid curiousity.

I agree with you. I hate the way the Yankees have been managed recently. I also think that Rivera is one of the most underrated players ever.

Although the Yankees do seem to be trying to grow talent again, I'm sure they will spend like crazy to replace Rivera. There is a lot of talk about them spending absurd money to get K-Rod from the Angels.

hey crimsonkid, did you finally get that email? (i think you might have gotten in!) .....btw i'm not applying to harvard med but I have 2 friends who did and are in the same position as you guys! gluck everyone

Out of curiousity, did you get in no where else last year?? Or were you really that determined to go to HMS???

oh i'm an unusual applicant- last year i was halfway through another harvard doctoral program, and i was hoping to merge it into the HMS md/phd program (to get MSTP funding)--make sense? but since it didnt work out last year, im now applying to more schools as well as reapplying HMS.

hey, for all you guys complaining about a late HMS decision date this year, its more nerve wracking for me, as all my other schools aren't giving out decisions until week of March 26th and even April 1st! my torturous wait continues...

Hi dentalgrl, i STILL haven't gotten anything...i doing reading for class, and i'm forcing myself to check mail not more than once per page read..... 🙁 did your friends get the email much later?

Hey folks, during the wait, here is something to cheer up about...

HMS's dean of medical education Jules Dienstag never received any degree or residency from HMS... yet he now controls the top position for medical education there now.

finally, since I've been around Longwood for a while, you should realize that most of the interviewers you meet and top professors/chairs here are not HMS alums either. E.g. The chair of BWH's Dept of Medicine (by far the ridiculously largest department) Joseph Loscalzo actually received all his MDPHD training from UPENN and worked at BU School of Med for years. Also, Joseph Martin, the HMS dean, never attended HMS either (instead at McGill I believe).

Thus, its just to show that not attending HMS doesn't really mean anything, and certainly not bias you against success at HMS later in your career.

p.s. FYI: In fact, those who have gone to HMS have often gone off to unusal careers like Michael Crichton, Peter Diamandis (founder of the X Prize), and Andrew Weill, the weird naturopathic-hugging popular advocate.

I don't think there is something to be read into here (the emails). if anything it shows us there is not one thing that harvard does with complete consistency and we should keep that in mind with the status pages. i believe everyone who got a "good" message can breathe easy but you never know what happened with everyone else; Harvard can't be perfect all the time.

hey crimsonkid,

Actually both of them got that email you guys were talking about (twice - one at 3:27 and another at around 3:30). But I saw that you were accepted to a lot of great programs so that is a great sign. Also, you got that weird financial aid thing that you were talking about too...so you might be "in the system"

Congrats on your other acceptances! Let us know if you ever get the email. the other thing i was thinking is I know this site is biased w/ so many overachievers lol, but it seems like so many more people got that email and fewer seemed to have not gotten it...hmm, i know i probably have NO idea what i'm talking about...but there's going to be less acceptances than rejections......just a thought but once again i have no clue what i'm talking about so I'm sure there's no relation to that email and whether you got in or not.

It's so hard to concentrate on anything substantial with this prolonged waiting. It would have been alright if HMS had initially told us March 19 instead of March 9 - then I wouldn't have spent the last 2 or so weeks hoping for good news....but I feel like HMS has been stringing us along, making us feel like any day could be the day. How many of those days can I take in a row, anyhow? 😳

how do u get to the fin aid site where you check if you have the "good message" ie call the office or "bad message" ie login failed. when i try to go to it I can't even request a pin and it says

The Harvard Medical School Financial Aid Office is in the process of preparing the application for the 2007-2008 academic year. The site should again be available on March 21. In the meantime, if you have questions about your aid, please feel free to call us at 617-432-1575. Thank you.

The site was available yesterday and this morning. But HMS shut it down after being pestered incessantly by keeners🙄

oooooohhhh

icic. damn u harvard. guess I've gotta wait

Here is my theory:

Harvard loves boasting that 80 or so % of people accepted matriculate.
harvard F***ed up by entering people into fin aid site ealry -probably signifying acceptances.
now they want to cover their ass cause they want to be one of the last schools to accept people so they don't accept anyone who might withdraw soon.

perhaps its true, but i know several schools who announce later (UPENN doesnt announce until the week of 26th, and Hopkins' last wave of acceptances come on April 1st)

I think I'm done with this hoping/waiting business. Harvard wouldn't have taken that site down so quickly if it hadn't meant anything. I got the "failed" message, so I am finally going to accept my rejection graciously. I already told my family and friends....so now, I dont even want to see that letter that comes on the 19th.

goodbye and goodluck to everyone else!!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Wow I'm glad to be catching up with this thread LONG after the hype/freaking-out yesterday afternoon 😀 No emails at all for me, but I've given up hope since yesterday's failed login.

It's University of Alberta. There are some great medical schools in Canada besides McGill 😉 (but then again, the admissions process is somewhat messed up here with some schools being extreme MCAT/gpa ****** with stringent cut-offs while others being ridiculous extracurriculars ******. It's defnly led to some brain drain.

ditto

i got the email twice and i was rejected pre-interview so there goes that special treatment theory. i also personally find it kinda rude to keep sending me crap if i've already been rejected...three times the reminder.

Word. Two emails plus an MD-PhD snail mail rejection.

People applying to NP:

So i've been talking to some NP alumni, and it seems that they are phasing out the program because, as one person somewhat bluntly said, "it was a failure." Apparently the program is not very popular, even for the people in it and running it. 😕 I'm pretty sure this wasn't just an unusually bitter sample group. I mean, Harvard's still Harvard, so students are still getting good board scores and residency matches....but apparently the program is unsatisfactory enough that they are phasing it out after this experimental run.

So....what does this mean for us. Will (rather, would) we go through the same program or have they changed it for the better? Have any of you heard of this? I'm really interested in what you all have heard, because (as for everyone I'm sure) Harvard would definitely be a top top cosideration if I were accepted.....if 🙂

here is an article from a local hms publication. it outlines the changes in the curriculum and how it is organized this year.

Had anyone in Boston checked their snail mail today & heard something back?:luck:
i haven't seen anything yet....sigh. maybe today's when they put all ~200 acceptances in the mail?

acceptances at HMS usually go out on the last day i.e. march 19. i do not think that you want your letter mailed out today.

Imagine when the first person to receive post-interview mail posts....it will be momentous. Millions will die. (Okay, maybe just the 1000 or so who interviewed.)

Heh. 🙂 Well, for the record, Boston area here, and nothing in the mail today.

.Anyone else out there addicted to this thread? I keep telling myself I’m going to quite, but nothing in the mailbox again today…so…must…check…SDN. .

I am! And I know to expect a thin envelope already too, haha.

I need to quote omegaxx ... we had an interesting exchange:

me: "How am I to live when the application cycle ends? How am I to survive without SDN? ..." [I've become quite emotionally attached to this thing]

omegaxx: "Dear Dr. [my last name], I have diagnosed you with SDN abuse. The onset is unusually acute as the symptoms which had taken 4 months to develop in me developed in you within 2 weeks. Therefore I am putting you on maintanence treatment, wherein you will be given a tapering dose of premed101.com three times a day for 1 month. With your informed consent and cooperation, we can hopefully wean you off this stuff when June rolls around.

Now if you don't mind, I gotta go get my SDN fix."

and *this*, folks, is why HMS gave omegaxx the "good" financial aid msg on Wed 😉 congrats my friend! 🙂 (and everyone else too - you'll be clutching your big fat envelope by this time next week! =)

Amester, you being in BC, I think even I will receive that thin envelope before you do 🙂

Dude, Amester07, can I join the 12 step program too?

WRT to 'the login theory', I'm beginning feel badly for those that got the 'good message'. I was a 'login failed' type, so now if I get a thin envelope I'll be just fine. But if I get a thick one, I'll be ecstatic. OTOH, if I had gotten the good message and then got a thin envelope I'd be _crushed_.

I think this is why the ‘bad message’ people are the strongest believers in the login theory. It stings for a while but then makes it easier to face the future.

I've been trying to stay away from this thread, but I just can't help myself. I haven't heard from Harvard since I interviewed. What makes it worse is that Longwood is like my home away from home. :scared:

I don't think any Yankees fan underrates Rivera. He has been and always will be my favorite Yankee. And it's not only for the music they play when he steps onto the field... "Enter Sandman". :-D It's hard to imagine the team without him.

i bet this snow's gonna delay everybody's letters. 🙁

for others who also live in Boston... you don't want to get a letter in the mail tomorrow (Saturday)-- trust me. last year when i was rejected from HMS, my letter arrived on the Saturday, while my friends who got into HMS got their priority mail packet mid-next week.

but then again, i know i'm getting turned down again. oh well.

I read somewhere that the letters are ALL thin- that you'll have to open it for the verdict.

despite the fact that i got the "login failed" message, my parents have convinced me to keep hope alive.

so now i'm pissing myself in anticipation.

Pancho - When do you lose your probationary status?

This would certainly check with acceptances being priority mailed on the 19th, with the financial aid website coming back online on the 21st.
