I don't want to sound cruel/harsh because I know how hard getting a rejection is...it just doesn't feel good. But some of you guys really need to get over yourselves. I know Harvard is a great school...but its not the ONLY school. It may have been your dream school, but I'm sure there are other schools similar to Harvard that will help you achieve your real dream - becoming a physician. I hope I don't get flamed for this, but seriously...people...stop being so lame.

Not gonna flame you, but don't judge people until you've been in their shoes. This is a result of a long term build up of hopes and the disappointment isn't easy

But you're right. This is only a disappointment. If I get a no from UFT, then I'll really be able to hear my heart shatter, lol 🙂

Aww, c'mon! This thread was DESTINED to be a tearjerker!

The saddest part is... no one's even holding a rejection letter yet!!! At least last year the drama began with an actual post-interview rejection, lol.

Wow, I'm really behind, but can someone tell me what they are using for the id/pin to test the fin aid login?

it says it on the website, but its your social security number for ID and your AMCAS number for your PIN

id = your social sec number
pwd = your AMCAS id

its all explained on that page

good luck

Thanks...i guess 🙁 Login failed. well, that supports current theory bc I definitely did not do so hot on the interview.

Lol! You make an excellent point pinfeathers. No worries akinf, my melowdramatic posts are only half serious and all in good fun. Just trying to cheer a few people up (myself included). My apologies if my twisted, overly sarcastic sense of humor has annoyed anyone. Ha, it's just my way of coping with pre-notification stress.😉

No, I don't think people are being lame. If you look at any of the waiting for decision threads, people talk about the school as if it is the one and only. This thread is yet another version of that. And for this crazy waiting period, every letter becomes my world for a little while 🙂.

has anyone's status changed from "failed" to "contact"?

The hope lives on 🙂

hey folks-- if you havent been following the other HMS fin aid poll thread... someone just said something that may throw the fin aid message theory in limbo. here is a copy-paste of what i had written...

what do people think? (i've been a quiet reader from the beginning, but i thought this might be worthwhile to chime in) does this offer hope?

For what it's worth: I interviewed for MD-PhD (HST only), got the "contact the fin aid" office message, but did not get a phone call. However, I know from last year that MD-PhD phone calls were spread out over a few days. Keeping my fingers crossed... :scared:

WHOA-- what did you just say?!?!1?!?!?! can you call HMS tomorrow and check over the phone if you were actually accepted (since they do tell an MD/PHD applicant over phone afterall).

so if "contact the fin aid" office message does not correlate with immediate acceptance call (for MD/PHD program at least), should that suddenly give me hope that all hope is not yet lost with a "login failed"??!?!?!?

ahhhhh, paranoia creeping back.... but I live 10 minutes down the street from HMS, so i'll definitely get the mail first when it comes (still hasn't as of Wednesday night).

BACKGROUND and EXPLANATION (for those who are new):
The running-theory is that when attempting the HMS fin aid portal: https://medweb.med.harvard.edu/finai...pp/PgHome.aspx ...

"LOGIN FAILED" message= rejected (maybe waitlisted)
"contact the fin aid office" message = accepted

this was the point of this whole poll thread, which has been depressing folks left and right...however, nobody has been able to confirm this because formal letters havent started arrivng yet...

but... those who have been following the other HMS main thread all know MD/PHD programs have already started calling folks with acceptance offers since the beginning of this week (and after 3 days, they should have called the small list of MD/PHD applicants already). thus, we now have a small group of folks who can potentially validate the theory above.

biotsrama's post is very relevant in that he/she has not received a call yet, but biotsrama still got the "contact the fin aid office" message!!! -- this now throws the message theory into limbo...

now do you follow my newfound excitement/paranoia?

but then again, I had gotten a "login failed" and had a very ****ty HMS interview (during that Nor'easter back in Feb)-- my faculty interviewer chatted on the phone for 15min (he was late), and cut my interview short (only 30min) cuz he had to goto clinic and he was only a temporary stand cuz of the storm and didnt read my fine well at all.

anyways, biotsrama, if you are reading this, can you please call MD/PHD office tomorrow and calm some of our nerves? thanks

the fin aid website does not mean anything for now. it is still uncertain what it actually is. if you are going to wait for the letter you might as well check it...it looks like you got in from the profs email. this might sound selfish, but if you decide to check and get the "contact admissions office" message or "log in failed" could you please let us know as this might give us more insight into the madness.

thanks

oh i second that doughgirl! HMS is such a crap shoot... its about like if they based addmissions on taking our heart rate at any random time during our rollercoaster day to decide our fates that way.

because it went into the mail early this week, I'm betting Bostonians like us will get it later today if not tomorrow.

c'mon fat package!

I swear, SDNers make excellent CSI... God forbid any one of these pre-meds decide to be a criminalist... poor crminals, they might as well surrender before the crime.

as the who song for CSI MIAMI goes... "yeahhhhhh... DU-DUH..." the suspense lingers...

it'd be cooler if one of us was Bond and actually sneaked into Gordon hall to take a peek!

My contact inside HMS spoke to the financial aid people. They claim that nothing coming out of the website has any validity, that the system isn't running yet. It'll only mean something when you actualy log-in. It doesn't really explain why people get different messages, but that's what they say.

I don't know...why would we get different messages? I am resigned to my rejection. I've even updated my mdapp accordingly. Good luck to those keeping the faith.

I thought the Who song was CSI NY... Baba O'Reilly... NO?

When I tried to access the login page it said to close the page immediately... some security bla bla bla... I got scared... such a coward 😳

how do you explain those with the "contact" message receiving their SSN and AAMC ID when they request the PIN?

applicants' profiles are not placed at the fin aid office until they are admitted.

their office probably just gave some generic b.s. statement [i.e. "just dont listen to it even though its right simply because we dont want to admit the loophole and that we f'ed up"]. c'mon, when one is directly accused of something like that- just like politicians- their first instinct is to deny the claim even they know its right.

then again-- i have 2 questios--

1) if you got the "contact fin aid office" message before- do you now get the "please close window" message?
2) if you got the "login failed" message before, do you still get the same login-failed?

--> because if nothing has changed for the login-failed folks and original successful login "contact fin aid office" message simply changed to the "please close window"--then NOTHING HAS ESSENTIALLY CHANGED other than the edited text for those minority who could login anyways. see my point?

we need 2 brave souls (who each had gotten diff messages yesterday) to test it today and confirm...

Looneytunes- were you original one of those "LOGIN FAILED" folks or the "contact fin aid office" message folks YESTERDAY? cuz if you were login-failed yesterday but now got this today, then that would be a significant change in their system!

When I tried to access the login page it said to close the page immediately... some security bla bla bla... I got scared... such a coward 😳

I strongly believe, the people who got the 'contact financial aid' message yesterday were admitted. To cover up the loophole, HMS has closed the complete web site. People calling for clarification which might have pissed them off.

Now you aren't even able to try to login, it just says "The Harvard Medical School Financial Aid Office is in the process of preparing the application for the 2007-2008 academic year. We will be sending out information as to when this will become available in March. In the meantime, if you have questions about your aid, please feel free to call us at 617-432-1575. Thank you."

I was getting the sorry message yesterday and this morning, but now . . .

yeah, i just noticed that...maybe they found out that we found a loophole and decided to shut it down entirely?

could it be that she is talking about the security certificate? that pops up before you even have the option of logging in. it has something to do w/ the network one is on.

No the whole page is shut down now. This mystery just keeps getting more interesting.

Also, is the consensus that they are sending out letters today? So we'll be receiving them in about 3 days?

hmm you might be right-- there is a weird webpage certificate thing that recommends you close. i added the site to safe long time ago, probably why i forgot about it now.

so that message is definitely not it then.

damn, WHO told their friend inside HMS to call fin aid? crap, now it'll be closed for posterity (i was hoping my grandson could still use it 🙁 )

Absolutely! They know they are totally busted! Yet another example of what the power of SDN can do! I love that these med schools can't do anything without getting called on it. I'm so proud of us right now 👍

yeah, that's just windows throwing a hissy fit about the security certificate. nothing noteworthy.

Epidemic...you need to give it up....it's over, we didn't get in, get over it. It's pretty obvious when the MSTP students who got phone calls get one message as do some MD applicants but most do not, that the people who got the changed message are the accepted applicants. Who knows, I could be wrong but I'd put the odds at about 100:1.

I hate to say it but: agreed.

Wish someone could prove me wrong though....anyone who gets hardcopy letters that negate this let us know.

thats okay mizilan. not your fault.

as for hope- remember- its not until the "FAT LADY SINGS"... so meanwhile go "kick the tires and light the fires BIG DADDY".

but i'll be realistic and admit you guys are right. lets just hope the waitlisters are among those still given the "login failed" in the interim.

That would be me🙁 Don't hate me for trying to be thorough. I'm just amazed that spooked them into shutting it down.

btw, i'll tell you guys that i am actually re-app to HMS (can you imagine i went thru this same post-interview torture last year and i'm living thru it again now?!), I checked my old archives and my HMS rejection letter last year arrived in my Boston mailbox on Saturday, March 11, 2006.

Obviously we're a week late now this year (applications went up to 7500 this year i heard from the assistant dean), so i cant say what date for certain. but east coast folks should get it by Saturday definitely.

but i'm actually hedging towards today arrival for east coast (given that some had said they called and HMS was mailing earlier this week)... anyways, time for my 2nd rejection letter now... 🙁 🙁 🙁

let's not be so negative!! regardless, please let us know when you receive any mail from HMS so we can begin to test our theories of arrival time and possible links to the financial aid site's cryptic messages.

I don't mean to let anyone down here, but there is a chance that waitlisted people could be given the "good" financial aid message. Some schools have waitlisted people submit their financial aid info.

i agree, i just didnt want to admit it to myself out loud. but you're probably right.

btw, given your fantastic 42 and your wide choices of schools i see from your list, where you looking to go? (assuming harvard, upenn, and ucla all give you yesses soon)

hmm good question. does anyone know if waitlisted people from last year were able to access the financial aid website?

everybody was so happy and/or miserable after the finaid thing last year that everybody just stopped posting all of a sudden, so it's hard to be able to say something concrete about waitlists.

It's kind of creepy, it's like a plague swept through SDN.

Has anyone been able to find solid corroboration of our theory in last year's threads?

ie) "I got the contact messsage AND got my letter of acceptance today"
"I got the login failed message AND got my rejection letter today"

b/c of we could find either one, then we'd have a better idea about the validity of the theory.

Whichever school is the cheapest and in the city that my wife likes the best.

^ roflcopter!

the school finally realized they f'ed up with the loop hole

i got the login does not exist message this morning.... now website is down... i guess its a reject after all - otherwise why would they take the site down till march 21 - the day when all letters have arrived...

this must be just anti SDN people like us who know about it.... they have officially declared war on us 😛

Does it say the site will be up again March 21?

Edit: Ah, I see the message now. Thanks.

What is so wrong with people being able to find out their status a little before the mail arrives? thoughts?

Whichever school is the cheapest and in the city that my wife likes the best.

hahaha you remind me of someone from last year's cycle. His name is Dajimmers and he is a first year at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Anyhow, it was the same deal for him.

If you look at last year's thread like this, which is almost identical in nature, he was one of very very very few regular SDNers who had gotten accepted at the Hbomb but he turned it down both partially for his wife because of her job and because it was cheaper to stay in Michigan amongst other reasons.

Out of curiousity, did you get in no where else last year?? Or were you really that determined to go to HMS???
