Are there any Harvard Dental Students out there that can give me an honest perspective on their experience so far? Also, can you give an opinion on how the environment for minorities is at Harvard? I would greatly appreciate it.

The real minority at HSDM is the non-mormon white male, of which there are only two in the class of 2007. I think our class is pretty diverse. Students from Korea, Taiwan, China, Iran, Peru, Polanc etc. I think there are 12 caucasians and the remaining 22 are minorities. There are many minority professors, clubs, activities etc.

From a white male point of view, my experience so far has been real good. There are definitely things I think should be changed but I do not regret the 135,000$ tuition I'm paying to go here. The first two years were challenging with the entire medical curriculum + dental. Clinic thus far has been great. Don't just apply here if you are interested in academics or research. Maybe 10-20% of our class is interested in academics or research but most of us want to be gp's or specialists. You will leave here very competent clinicians contrary to what many may think. Anyway, there are plenty of students willing to share more of their experience. Call the school and ask for their contact info...

Can you tell more about the clinical experience at Harvard? HSDM catches a lot of flak here, but I've never seen any hard information on the clinical requirements & etc. required to graduate.

HSDM was a five year school in which the fifth year was research only. Obviously this attracted academicly oriented students. Now with the four year pbl curriculum it is structured to allow the student to pursure whatever he/she wants be it research, more clinical experience, international dentistry, business, law...whatever. We can take classes at any of the Harvard schools at no extra charge...(business, law, med, undergrad, divinity, etc.) I had a private language tutorial at Harvard College during first year. There is a lot of extra time in years 1,2, and 4 so we can pursue whatever...Now I'm trying to get my golf handicap down to 10 :)

I think it would be beneficial to applicants for us to post clinical graduation requirements from the various schools. It would actually be useful in the ADA guide to the dental schools.

The things I like about HSDM clinics. We all have our own chair, lots of faculty in the clinic, great sterilization dept, and helpful assistants....What I don't like--no chairside radiographs, pre-clin lab is outdated.

Below is listed some of the min. requirements for perio, endo, and prosth...there are too many requirements for operative, ortho, surgery, peds etc. I don't have time to list them.

16 prophys
32 quadrants scaling & root planing
8 perio surgeries (includes implant, free gingival graft, surgical flap for root planing, crown lengthening, bone graft, or gingivectomy.)
20 crowns
2 three unit bridges
8 post and Core--1 cast
4 cast rpd
2 immediate rpd
4 complete dentures
2 immediate complete dentures
14 root canals

Hope this was helpful. If anyone has other questions about HSDM please feel free to PM. Just don't ask me what I think about Harvard compared to another school. I'm obviously biased.

Those requirements are pretty good. I could do without all the perio though. :)

as a basis of comparision could some people from other dental schools post the same clinical req's?
