I know this isn't directly linked towards podiatry, but all of us have dealt with advisors. I feel like at my college they are usually good, but today has really put me in a slump and just frustration is everywhere due to stress levels and anger.

Great! After having an advisor looks at my past schedule they inform me that had I chosen a Human Bio major instead of Physio major at just the start of last semester I probably would be graduating this Spring instead of next Fall. Also informed me that had I chosen Human Bio I also wouldn't have had to take/ currently taking 4 of the hardest MSU undergrad classes offered on this whole campus! Great news to hear, also great to hear that they geared me towards what they do consider to be the hardest major any Lyman Briggs student can take then added to say and some believe it to be the hardest major on campus! Great to hear them tell me this crap a couple semesters later. Great to know that when I asked them three years ago what they consider to be the three toughest majors they never mentioned the one I JUST PICKED!

I am just furious that when I was in my Sophomore year I remember asking them, at this point what are two majors in which with my current classes I would have the best opportunity to graduate within 4yrs, not 4.5? Also, I would like to know what is thought of as the two toughest majors in the Biological Science area. At that time they said Physio or Nutrition would be the best and did not mention that my Physio major is at least in the top 3 hardest majors at MSU. BUT today they say that they were wrong and noticed Human Bio where you only have to take the Intro to BioChem and Intro to Physio classes, not the 4 classes that are harder than med school physio and biochem.

Has anybody had an issue where their advisor guides them towards the route that would take the longest, thus making you pay more for school???

This is just irritating b/c my GPA is now taking a beating due to having this major

I know that feel, bro! My University put me on a conditional admit list for acceptance into my university. They said I didn't achieve a good enough G.P.A to get into regular corses.Turns out though, that I did have the right G.P.A and I wasn't a conditional admit. So not only I'm behind in taking Biology and Chemisty for my freshman year, I'm behind for two semesters! To make it worst, my advisor said podiatrist don't do surgery. It makes me wonder why the pre health advisor are so baised when it comes to something that isn't a MD.

Well at the time I had no clue what the difference was between Human Bio and Physiology, difficulty wise. I expected them to tell me then that I was on track to take the 4 hardest classes offered on campus with the major I was about to select when I asked, well difficult is this major. And if you think "well they shouldn't have to tell you this" then how is it that they are telling me this now and not then?

I am also gonna be 4.5yrs b/c my Freshmen yr they told everyone it would be smart to take one elective both semesters so you don't overwhelm yourself your first year. Great, now I am going back to school a half a year more to waste $11K in tuition money b/c you tell every student to do the one thing that will most likely make you a 4.5 or 5yr student. We only have one trustworthy advisor in our entire part.

Then the MSU pre-professional advisor had no clue where any podiatry schools were in the nation. She couldn't even tell me one. I feel as if for how many kids come thru MSU for pre-professional advising I may be one of the first in the last 3yrs to actually apply to a podiatry school out of Lyman Briggs or the Natural Science college

Don't you guys have course catalogues that tell you what classes/requirements are necessary for your major?

My friend, it is not the end of the world. Be grateful for what you have. 👍

I know it isn't the end of the world, but the fact that I could be graduating this Spring instead of next fall b/c an advisor didn't take the extra 5 minutes to help me out while I had an appointment with her 2yrs ago frustrates me.
We do have guides for each major but somehow now they tell me they should have told me it would be best to go down that route since I specifically asked the question they answer wrong about. The fact that my GPA will plunder because over the last two semesters I have been in the 4 hardest courses on my entire campus (and that is coming from 5yrs of past MSU counselors and current med students) while the students taking the Human Bio major route take upper bio classes their senior year that I took my Sophomore year and intro to physio and intro to biochem classes.

Kinda frustrating to learn this stuff two years too late. I do blame myself a bit, but the fact that sometimes the people paid by the University sometimes don't take the extra time to care for our students.

I go to the University of Mississippi and the advisors there are in my opinion complete crap (at their jobs, not as people). I went once. I went to three different folks, and they both told me three different things. One told me I should take intro to chem before chem. One told me I had to have pre-calculus before calculus (I didn't.) One of them even told me that they really didn't need me to stop by.

When I went to the pre-health professions office, the lady in there didn't know what podiatry was. She said I was the only student there who had ever come around asking about it. Pretty sad, don't you think?

Sorry this happened. I think everyone has gotten popped by a bad advisor at one point or another. You are def not alone.

Note the big, waving, red flag...all schools state clearly that the school will not take responsibility for errors in advisement and that you are ultimately responsible for your education. That noted, their "advice" is just that. Not words to live by or make decisions by.

Since you didn't note the big, waving, red flag...you must accept personal responsibility.

I know it burns, but it's too late now; it's already broke. Can't sue them for tuition or take a time machine back....so keep it movin' and spare yourself the ulcer.

From some of the things my friends went through it really does seem like advisers want students to stay extra time in college (don't take this course with this course, wait until the load is lighter= you will stay an extra semester). Helps going through course catalog and planning your 4 years straight away with electives. Also talking with people a year above you helps. I figured out that my adviser is full of air early on

AGREE COMPLETELY!!! It is just odd b/c in my Natural Science college (Lyman Briggs) it is a different degree inside State and usually they are good, but I do remember at orientation they told us to pick ONE elective in each of our first two semesters. By my fourth semester at State I realized that so many of my other friends realized that they now have to take at least three classes during the Summer over the next 2yrs just to graduate b/c they told them to take an elective that isn't in your degree. Way I look at it is these advisors sometimes look at their own benefit first. The college tells them that if there are more students enrolled then your pay increases b/c we can pay you more, so now they don't care if you go 4.5yrs. If 1,000 extra students go back for 1 more semester b/c you told us to take two electives your Freshmen year the school now has $10 million more in tuition being paid to them. Now that advisor can get a $5K raise b/c they ruined some students' chances at graduating in just 4yrs.

My issue is also that I found out that my major is the ONLY major of the 15+ Natural Science degrees that requires 20+ credits of 420+ level classes. And one of three to have 20+ credits of 400+ level credits, but the other two degrees takes a simple BioChem and Physio class while I am stuck with the only MSU degree that requires the med-school difficulty BioChem and Physio (both 2 semesters long).

I have to work my @$$ off to graduate with a 3.25 cGPA while the Human Bio major students I know slack off and still get a 3.40 cGPA b/c they have a total of ONE 400+ level class they have to take and that is the simple BioChem class where you can study just the day before and get a 3.0 in the class, while my class you have to study for two weeks just to be lucky to get a 2.0 in the class.

Just a point of clarification, we do not get paid more based on how long you take to graduate. We receive no financial incentives to keep you at MSU longer and we are advisors, we give advice but your degree and career plans are ultimately up to you. If the major that you chose was too challenging for you, then you always had the option to change your major to one that you consider less challenging.

Alright, Curringt we get it! You and Hughes disagree on a great deal of things. You don't like him, he doesn't like you, etc etc. It was cute at first, but the amount of threads you are necro-ing is getting a little absurd. You're obviously looking through his post history and just posting rebuttals. Honestly, it seems sort of immature, and your name/position makes it very easy to determine your real life identity.

So.... Please stop

I appreciate your comment. I was never trying to hide my identity, just clarifying things that I have seen with my name or my office in them, which is a part of my position. Comments that are presented as facts on here are one of the main reasons why both advisors and professional schools hesitate to recommend students use it as a source. I regularly talk with students about their social media presence and how they need to be more careful about what they post as it can have dire consequences for their professional school goals, because as you said, it is not that hard to figure out who you are, and this was a good example of just that. You have no idea who is on here looking at what you post and what mechanisms they have to figure out who you are.

Also, I didn't look through his post history, just did a search of words or phrases. I'm sure that he has more posts than the 3 I responded to.

Have a good day and best of luck with your professional school goals!
