Has anyone been accepted or rejected post-interview at the University of Washington?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I'm on the waiting list as of last week. Is that a good or a bad thing? I was just kind of wondering where other people stand if they've hear anything from the UW. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you are . . . the little frustrating "competitive" list. I guess that means more waiting till April. I wouldn't worry, though. I work with a lot of residents who graduated from UW and most of them got in off the wait list. One even had to wait till late July before finally being accepted! Hang in there!

I got a 29 on the MCAT and have a fairly high GPA. Do you still think I have a shot with that MCAT score?

Waitlisted too!! Ahhhh! why do they tortue us so?!!!!!

I don't understand...

Good luck to all!

I was accepted last Friday, to my utter delight...I couldn't be more happy...and HONORED. Best of luck to you all....I'm sure it's only a waiting game. I've heard of tons of people who got in later in the year....so your good news should be coming soon. 😉

also put in waitlist/competitive pool etc. Do any of you know how many people are put in this pool vs. how many they accept immediately? My MCAT numbers are also below 30-- and was wondering if initial acceptees had high MCAT stats.

Anybody have any secrets to the interview they would like to impart with?

Real stuff... not "be yourself", "you'll be fine", etc...

read the newspapers like there's no tomorrow. and stick to your guns on ethical issues....be wary of the run-around. 🙂 good luck!

hongspruce, I think i posted something somewhere else on a UW forum, but "being yourself" isn't enough. I was very tricky questions about health care policy. I was scared after reading SDN, only had about a week to prep for the interview, and read books like mad about health care. I checked about 7 out of the library, read three of them, and read articles from the NYT. I'd BE SURE to know about this new medicare bill, about managed care, medicaid and medicare. As far as ethics questions, i was asked none. I think for those, know about physician assisted suicide laws for WA-- and basically like the previous poster said-- stick to a moral answer. REad their BIOETHICS website for sure, and you should be totally fine for ethics questions. The toughies are the health care questions!

oh yeah, and the other thing i've noticed and experienced in my interview-- and i read about on SDN as well-- is whatever you say in your answer can be used as material for the next question... as a "follow up to what you just said etc."

Any suggestions as to favorite websites on:

medicare bill, about managed care, medicaid and medicare?

This will definitely will be a tough one for me too. How to learn there is all to learn about US health care policy and international health policy in less than a week...

It will be difficult to do extensive readings in books since I have less than a week to prepare. Suggestions on quick readings, summaries, etc... would be extremely helpful.

Thanks for your responses!

I too had less than a week to prepare-- I read Epidemic of Care (easy read). I'd suggest looking up articles on NYT, Economist Online and WSJ and looking for those that specifically talk about health care. Someone suggested reading euthenasia.org (or something). Also, you don't need to read an entire book. Just read selected chapters-- that's what I did. Also, don't get overwhelmed-- just know the basics.

Sample Questions:
1. Top three problems in Health Care today
2. New Medicare bill and all issues surrounding drug prices
(I was asked whether drug companies were ethical)
3. Think about possible solutions (even if they are not ultimately feasible) like socialized medicine in the US (pros: health care for all, cons: people in US don't like rationed care)

Ethics:
Just read the UW Bioethics website-- you'll get the idea~

I'm dishing out advice, because I relied heavily on SDN for prep, and it really made a big difference. Also get to UW early. I got very lost in the buidling. GOOD LUCK!

They say that they accept 10% right away, reject 10% right away and put the other 80% into the competative pool. Obviously these percentages are of people interviewed. Good Luck, because most of the people in your class will be pulled from this pool.

Most will be pulled from the competative pool. In fact, my prediction will be exactly 88.8888888889%, making it the majority.

How long were you guys waiting before hearing a post-interview response (accept/interview/"competitive") from UW?

i know that the executive committee meets about once a month to go over the most recent interviewies. the next meeting will be on dec 10. they then start deciding who to accept or reject right away, or to continually review (competitive). they promise to contact you via snail mail within 10 days of the metting. but if you are local, you could very well get a letter after two days.

i interviewed on nov 21 so the 10th will be my first EXCOM meeting. i am just praying to be one of those fortunate 10% who get an early acceptance. if so i could save a lot of doe by not going to any other interviews!!!

Jenuine,
I'm just curious to know, as the resident-only-one-accepted-to-UWSOM (and congrats, btw!), what kind of stats got you straight off the list right off the bat? That's one elusive position you're in and I'd be interested to know what got you in so quickly. Thanks!

honestly...I have no freakin' idea!! My stats are definitely not off the charts by any way shape or form 😉 but they're solid, and I thought my interview was probably the toughest I've had...although I must say I really enjoyed it. And yes...I have some pretty outstanding ECs...and good rec letters. I don't know though...I was under the impression that so did everyone else!!! I feel very lucky, to say no less...and every time I think about going to UW I get all excited and spontaneously start to smile. I hope you all have that feeling too, very soon!! Good luck! 🙂 🙂

Hey Jenuine,
can you please be more specific than that? If you're not comfortable posting your numbers, then a few examples of your "stellar" EC's or anything else would help. I wouldn't think you were bragging or anything, after all, I'm the one who's asking. Just very curious. also, URM status is always helpful. Hope to see you next year!

also, can you tell us if you got a small or large envelope?

I believe it is the same sized envelop for both rejection and acceptance letters.

I second that. That's what admissions said at the interview.
