I was wondering if anyone here has actually seen the Edinburgh facilities and can tell me what they're like? Are things up-to-date and modern? I only ask because I know how old the school itself is and that buildings in Europe tend to be older and smaller than buildings in the States. Hows the technology/classrooms, etc?

Hows the student housing?

I haven't been, but I did go to the vet school info session on Thursday and I have to say, I'm super impressed. The video and pics they showed were AMAZING. The school looks to be top of the line, they are going electronic with all the classes (ie. all the notes are online, online tutorials, etc). AND they are going to be expanding the Easter Bush facility so that all 4 or 5 years of your education will be there instead of split between Summerhall and Bush. Not to mention, they have TWO libraries! as soon as I get home I'll scan the map they gave us and post it so that you can get a better feel for it. = )

Did you go to the NYC meeting or the Portland one?

Someone else said the school only guarantees you 1 spay and 1 neuter. That seems crazy...those are the most basic of surgeries and if thats ALL they can give you does that mean they won't give you anything else? Will we fix open wounds, intestinal obstructions, or any other kinda basic stuff? This is really freaking me out.

This happens in the states too. At my clinic, one of our docs (a Cornell grad) only got to do one spay and neuter.

I went to NYC. They said that we would have opportunities to do spay/neuter clinics, but no mention of how many surgeries we would do. I would imagine that we are going to do several kinds since one of the professors did emphasis that the surgeries are not the non-recovery kind (the exact term slips my mind right now) since it is illegal in the UK. The only real way to find out is to email the school and ask.

You will find most of the UK schools don't offer much in terms of hands-on surgical training. They expect you to get that experience during EMS (extramural studies) - of which a LARGE amount is required by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS...governing agent of UK vet schools, similar to AVMA in the USA) in order for you to graduate. The quality and amount of surgical experience is kinda up to you. You can indeed seek out as much experience as possible; for instance go to the USA and volunteer with RAVS (Rural Area Veterinary Service).

The UK is very welfare-oriented and has strict laws about vivisection. Doing a terminal surgery would be "researching" on animals, and you cannot legally do that without a special researching license in the UK.

Hello,

I am an American currently going through my first year (GEP) in the vet program at Edinburgh. The facilities are very new, the animal hospital at Easter Bush were you do all your clinical years was built in 2000, I think so it is very modern. You will do your first one or two years at Summerhall, the city campus. It is in a old building but modern inside, like pretty much everything here in Europe. They are also currently building a new school at Easter Bush so eventually everything will be out there and Summerhall will be phased out.

As for the surgery question, they've told us many times we will do enough spay and neuters through EMS and otherwise to get bored with it, but I haven't gotten that far yet to find out.

Thanks! That makes me feel much better about going there if I don't get in somewhere in the states!!
