I just read an article of how folks who are doing well financially are cutting back on their spending even though they really don't have to because they are doing very well financially. Some people have canceled their vacation to someplace nice like Europe and stayed closer to home as an alternative. Some have cut back on dining out. I guess psychologically one feels compelled to hold back although financially the economy has not affected them at all because of the recession.
I think being a pharmacist we fit in this group. Speaking for myself I don't think I have cut back that much but I have cut back some. I was never a big spender to begin with, but I did buy a house when they rates were really low back in 2005 and this past Thanksgiving I bought a new car. In becoming a homeowner I'm more conscience of each paycheck due to the mortgage and utilities taking a bigger chunk from my bank account than the effect of the economy. Subconsciously when I see CNN or some news channel of major companies in financial limbo (GM, Circuit city, Ford etc..) seeing so many jobs being layed off, I'm thinking heck I might be next in the back of my head. So it has made me think to cut back some. Also seeing my 401K and Mutual funds take a hit has affected my spending behavior watching the Dow sink along with my Nest egg. Despite this, I still contribute the max amount I can each year because I'm thinking long term and am riding this out. I just don't do any spontaneous purchases as much anymore shopping like a new Xbox game or something frivolous.
I'm interested in hearing on anyone's current experience. Are you making more money now than say 6 months ago and cutting back/spending more, spending the same? If so what's your thinking on your spending habit? The economy, the media portrayal of the economy? Have you canceled that big vacation? How about you pharmacy students. Are you guys going to go out and get that BMW right after graduation or are you going to stay more grounded because of the economic climate? By the way P4s, congrats on making it this far you're almost done. I wish you all success.
