I just gave my kaplan final exam and had a concern about the gen chem section.

There were a few ideal gas calculation questions which involved using the gas constant (0.0821) in the calculation. My problem is that I don't know how to multiply anything with 0.0821 without using a calculator.

So if someone can give me a method or trick in using this number in calculations it would be much appreciated.

In the real DAT. There are no such calculations. They will either change the Real gas constant value to another arbitrary value like 1, or they will put the formula as an answer choice. By the way, if you can do well on topscore, I wouldn't worry about the calculations. I got 19 on topscore chem and got a 27 in the real exam. So just relax.

Any such calculations on topscore (ie. involving gas constant)?

Also, can someone else please confirm Rich's post about the real DAT not having such calculations.
 
I can't confirm Rich's post, but maybe you can use R = 82/1000 = 41/500. The denominator might be reduced when multiplying by a nice temp. You might even be able to round off even more and say R is 8/100 = 2/25. I got by on most Kaplan exams by using this approximation. Hope this helps a little?

Topscore assigned an arbitrary value I believe for the sake of calculation. Plus, if you search the forums. You will know that the calculations will be displayed if it is long or extensive. The ADA knows you do not have a calculator. So, stuff either cancels out or the calculations are displayed.

I highly doubt there'll be any .0821 calculation on the real thing..I wouldn't worry about it...I don't know about the canadian one tho
 
I didn't have one of those calcs, but just round. For the entire gen chem section I rounded numbers, to easily divide and this works pretty well.
 
Just use 0.1 and most of the answers should be able to be estimated with this...
