Have You Ever Failed a Science Class?

I am seriously, seriously considering to drop a genetics class I'm taking in school. I recently transferred from CC to UC. There is one midterm and one final. I got a D on the midterm.

Have any of you dropped a class you were potentially going to fail? Or did you just take the hit?

Unfortunately if I drop, it would put me under part time status, and I don't know how that will effect my financial aid.

Do you think that you would have a chance to do well on your final? If you think that you could pull off a B (or even an A) on it, then you could at least get a C in the class if withdrawing isn't an option. Definitely call the financial aid office first to see if withdrawing would hurt you.

P.S Didn't you get advice about this a few days ago? 😉

I withdrew from physics 2 once, I was doing terribly (was not entirely certain how bad, as they always did weird curves). I cannot imagine any reason to take a "C-" or worse over a "W". Unless of course you already have a slew of "W" grades, that would probably not look too good.

Having to pay more during a semester due to change in financial aid would be a small price to pay for protecting your GPA. I suggest you also speak to your college counselor, parents, etc.

Don't drop the class is my opinion. You still have the final (which you say is 60%, right?) and if you are only taking 12 units right now that means that you only have three (at max) other classes. You should be able to really concentrate on this class and get a B on the final so your grade can come up to a C or better. Jeopardizing your financial aid is a whole other issue that can only harm you. And all of this for what? Not believeing in yourself?

Challenge youself; don't just give up at the the thought that you need to do really well on this next test to get what you want!

Lastly, one option is perhaps repeating the class if you really are not satisfied with your grade. Just take it again when it is offered again and throw it on top of your planned curriculum in the future. By doing this, you won't lose any time towards graduation and you will have hopefully already established a firm foundation of genetics so that the next time around it should be a lot easier.

D is definitely a retake. D will be considered a fail if it is one of your major courses. Anything below C is considered not satisfactory. I think you might be able to waive C- though.

Thanks for the posts guys. I decided that I'm probably going to drop the class. I just don't want to take the chance for a "D" estruction on my GPA

One W is fine. Plan out better though next time you take genetics.

I don't know if different states or schools have different policies about their financial aid. At my school, as long as you have enough credits to be full time in a school year then you're fine. For example, we need 12credits/quarter to be considered full time; however, one could have 6 credits at the first quarter, 12 at the second, 18 at the last quarter and still be eligible for financial aid. You should definitely check with your school, if you're seriously considering dropping your class.

I got a 69.98 in Chem 3 last year. My prof was a jerk and did not round it to a C so I have to retake it this spring. It killed my GPA, and if he is the only person teaching it this spring I am going to go to the local CC to take it. He really pissed me off. I begged him to give me a 70 and he said no. I heard from other students he did the same to them, not giving B or A if really, really close. Some even failed....what really ticked me off was he was a replacement prof because the prof who was originally suposed to teach got sick the first day of class, I had taken him for Chem 2 and got an A. The replacement prof sent nasty e-mails to all the students encouraging them to withdrawl. I was doing ok in the class (A C and a B on first 2 tests, able to drop lowest) until after the withdrawl date when I Proceeded to Get a low D and an F on the last 2 tests and a D on the final. I'm still mad one year later.

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with that teacher. Maybe in time you can raise your GPA from that hit.
